Several movements were started to claim for civil rights. People had different beliefs about capitalism and communism. Therefore, several ideologies were spread during that period as people searched for the best ideology to favour their economic and social activities. In the research, an analysis will be done on the effects of the domestic cold war, the culture of conformity, and the Vietnam War. From the book entitled ‘Voices of Freedom,’ the Southern Manifesto, The Sharon Statement, and Redstockings Manifesto were events that occurred in the period from 1959s to 1980s and will be discussed in the research.
The Southern Manifesto
The Southern Manifesto was proposed in 1956. The Manifesto focused on the decision of the Supreme Court about Brown Vs. Board of Education. The Manifesto is associated with detrimental, like threatening the constitutional government. The Southern Manifesto described education as a reform which went contrary to the available constitution during the period of the 1950s. More so, the Southern Manifesto elaborates that the Supreme Court in the US failed to include the demands of the board of education in the 14th amendment of the constitution, which took place during the period of the 1950s. Chaos and confusion resulting from a decision by the Supreme Court regarding Brown Vs. Board of Education were described by the Southern Manifesto (Hampton & Fayer, 2011). The Manifesto was a threat to freedom because it proposed limiting the scope of government in making jurisdiction matters on education. In the Manifesto, there is a claim that parents and educational officers should be fully involved in matters of education and not trusting political leaders with the unwarranted exercise of power to educational matters. Therefore, the Manifesto caused confusion in the process of making policies in education. Don't use plagiarised sources.Get your custom essay just from $11/page
The Sharon Statement
The Sharon Statement is described in chapter 25 of ‘Voices of Freedom.’ It addressed the issue of young Americans for freedom. The Sharon Statement was proposed in 1960. As per the Sharon statement, arbitrary force is discouraged and supports that freedom is God-given. The detrimental associated with Sharon statement is that it discouraged political liberty in a country without economic freedom (Hampton & Fayer, 2011). The Sharon statement opposed the strict government rule and claimed it caused decreased liberty and ruined the social order. Eliminating communism was the target of the Sharon statement.
The Redstockings Manifesto
The Manifesto is described in chapter 26 of the book entitled ‘Voices of Freedom.’ The Manifesto addresses women’s freedom and ignores the interests of other domestic servants like men. Therefore, ignoring the liberation of men and taking a subjective approach to address the independence of women. In the Manifesto, there is a description of the way political, cultural, and economic institutions supported total male control to allow women to participate in some privileges (Hampton & Fayer, 2011). A threat to moral values is another focus of the Redstockings Manifesto of 1969.
The Domestic Cold War
The domestic cold war caused disagreements in America, as some people supported communism while others were anti-communist. In combating communism, there was a divide in the American societies, which was caused by the anti-communist consensus. The consensus threatened domestic politics in America, whereby the majority focused on anti-communism. Recent research indicates that the domestic cold war in America had negative implications on the culture, politics, and economy of the Americans. American businesspeople suffered a financial crisis, which later resulted in a recession. The uninformed soldiers lost their lives during the American cold war (Betts, 2017). Therefore, the domestic cold war had negative implications for the Americans and is associated with regional misunderstanding and institutionalized discrimination experienced today in US states with marginalized populations.
The cultural battles witnessed between American societies in the period of 1950s were due to the domestic cold war. The war paralyzed the unity that existed between communities. The anti-communist sentiments grew because of the effects of the domestic cold war. Companies fired employees after prejudices were spread based on cultural and racial identity as cold war spread. Suspicion of communist activity was witnessed during the domestic cold war. The liberal anti-communism witnessed during the cold war made it expensive to maintain the armed forces in America (Betts, 2017). Secrets between armed forces were disclosed as the pressure for the domestic cold war intensified in America. Some Americans were arrested and prosecuted because of spreading hatred in their areas of residence. Powerful leaders like Truman voted against communism and forced some Americans to oppose every communist thought.
A culture of conformity
In the 1950s, a culture of conformity spread in America. It was during the period when new employment patterns were introduced in America after World War II. The culture of conformity was associated with detrimental like division of duties based on gender whereby men were to be breadwinners and women were to maintain the affairs of the home. Social patterns were changed in society during the period of the culture of conformity. The culture of conformity criticized civilization, and the middle-class people in the society were pushed into poverty (Kagan, 2014). The culture of conformity changed the American economy by ruining some business operations and neglecting the progress caused by civilization.
Vietnam part 1
The Vietnam War had negative implications for Americans, which included loss of lives for the people involved in the battle. The American foreign policy was affected by the Vietnam War, whereby the US began attacking other countries to undermine their reputation in international relations. The Vietnam War was costly and caused the death of at least 58,000 Americans. Negative stereotypes of veterans in the Vietnam War affected the social norms of Americans (Miguel & Roland, 2011). Some people began viewing war as a normal thing to be used for revenge. The issue of narcotics was addressed in contemporary society during the period of the Vietnam War. Political hatred was spread in America due to the influence of the Vietnam War.
