Professional Reflection – Managing My Career is Part of Managing My Life
Professional qualities reflection allows me to reflect on the various professional events that have happened, which I feel are crucial in my career path. Through the evaluation of the events, I can recognize and work on improving my knowledge, strengths, weaknesses, and skills. Thus, there is an assurance of improving performance in my profession. Analyzing the professional qualities aims at questioning the current behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs, thus coming up with new and better insights and ideas to improve my practice in the future. Self-management plays a crucial role in professional reflections.
The existence of a precise measure of employees in an institution encourages employees to perform to their level best. My organization has adopted the self-evaluation system where the employees evaluate and analyze their performance (Ramaswamy & Chaubey, 2015). The system is quite effective as the employees can analyze themselves better than when the management does it. The self-evaluation system has dramatically helped me in improving my weaknesses as I have adequate time to assess and reflect on my performance. I have also managed to realize my strengths, which I have perfected as well, making me more unique in my workplace. Over time, my working relationship with my manager has progressively improved as I can share my challenges with him who has always helped me in solving them (Sujith, 2017). Among the things I have learned is about three steps of turning my weaknesses to my strengths. It will help to build me both in my career and my life. I have learned about the impact of leadership on any organization, which plays a vital role in running the entire institution (Holten & Brenner, 2015). There is the need for formulating good performance measure policy that will be a motivational factor to employees and make the managers’ work easier (Elbanna, Andrews, & Pollanen, 2016). I have learned the crucial concepts in management which include understanding the role rather than just viewing it as a supervisory role, effective management of organizational resources through allocating them where they are most effective and understanding the environment and philosophy in leadership positions.
As a manager, one must possess some vital skills which are needed to lead other people. Some of the skills I have are interpersonal skills that help me to effectively relate and interact with other employees (Custódio, Ferreira, & Matos, 2017). Communication skills ensure that information is successfully shared, thus having a unified team and decision making, which has a significant role in the success of the organization.
By reflecting on myself, some of the passions I have identified are having an adventure, being confident in my judgment, empowering others to find their passion, and being true to myself. My skills include problem-solving skills, time management, and the ability to accept and learn from criticism and flexibility (Wronka-Pośpiech, 2016). I have also understood some of my strengths, which include enthusiasm, patience, discipline, creativity, and trustworthiness. To add value to my organization, I must offer excellent customer service, improve the efficiency of procedures, saving resources, and becoming an expert in a given task (Demleitner, 2015). In my CLEAR model, my themes entail goal-focused leadership, where I support my employees and empower them towards making changes in their behaviors and beliefs, thus helping them to grow professionally and personally.
In many of the job postings for managerial work, the desired skills and experiences include excellent communication skills, good organization, and team building. To become competitive for the position, I need to perfect my organization skills (Ford, Piccolo, & Ford, 2017). The job postings relate with my model that focuses on empowering workers to change their behaviors, which must involve team building. The professional goals that make me competent for the manager position are becoming a better motivator and supporting and managing change (Baumgartner & Rauter, 2017). The steps in supporting and managing change include defining quantifiable objectives, making the objectives specific, and committing towards the goal. In becoming a better motivator, the steps in achieving this are publicizing my goals, setting a deadline, and rewarding myself.
Professional reflection is crucial in developing oneself and ensuring that one remains competitive in the job market. Through proper evaluation, people can perfect on their skills becoming successful in the profession.
