The role of social media is obvious when we compared Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012 in terms of disaster response. In 2005, there was no active usage of twitter or exchange of online news of any kind. Lack of information sharing during Hurricane Katrina left people to make individual decisions based on their basic personal prediction skills. Hurricane Sandy, on the other hand, social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, were very active. Shared information was available through posts, texts, photos, and videos. All the information was provided by individuals, the government and utility companies to keep the public updating.
