Self reflective essay
As a manager of a senior living community and a student pursuing business administration, studying management principles play an essential part in leadership. Recently, various organizations are collapsing due to the lack of people with proper management skills. Management principles entail several sectors that coordinate as one. Management principles encompass division of work, disciple, unity of direction, order, degree of centralization, and responsibility. As a business administrator in the making, before I took the class on management principles, I had little knowledge about why business administrators and other stakeholders in the business world should pursue such a course. Initially, I thought to attend a class on management principles was a waste of time; in my view, management principles were so obvious, and anybody could understand them easily. Therefore, there was no need to waste time studying management principles.
However, after attending a lecture on management principles, my view of the unit changed. I realized that a more in-depth knowledge of management principles was useful in team management, division of labor, promoting responsibility among all team members, and promoting discipline, among others. I also realized, although most people assume that studying management principles is an easy task, it entails so many concepts which as a manager and administrator, should be well acquainted. In the management principles class, one pivotal moment that will always stand out is studying the various management principles. Studying management principles enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of how to manage different types of people, groups, and projects. Skills learned through this class help me in creating a picture of how different people working on one project can coordinate and work together to produce good results.
One of the outstanding opinions I had about the subject matter of the class was that management principles entail only authority and unity of command. However, after taking the course, I realized that management principles were more than giving commands and waiting for work to be done by the juniors. I learned that as an administrator and a manager, discipline is paramount. Respect and discipline promote a healthy relationship between the subordinate and the executive. When employees enjoy a healthy relationship with the executive, it becomes easier for them to share the problems facing the organization, making the executive find a long-lasting solution. Knowledge acquired from management principle classes has uplifted administration career. As a manager, I have been able to provide a better business direction and promote the division of labor to fit each worker’s specialization. However, I need to improve in ensuring workers have all the resources they require to provide quality services. Lastly, everyone is supposed to learn management principles to understand how s/he should contribute to the upward mobility of the business.
