Introduction

Finding space is among some of the significant challenges faced by major cities. Tearing down beautiful old landmarks to give room for new development is not a choice to be taken. Even though these old buildings may not provide the high density required for modern cities’ jobs and homes. New York is among one of the towns to repurpose sites that were previously used for warehousing or manufacturing. To increase space in this area, the city had to overcome the challenge of a functioning and crucial railroad storage and transit yard situated right in the middle of the region. This they solved by building on rooftops; that entailed creating an 11.3-hectare neighborhood on two platforms. 300 caissons of 1.2-1.5 meters in diameter were extended from the bedrock up through the roof of the rail yard to improve on the support of the super tall skyscrapers. These foundations are then anchored deep in the ground, at 6-24meters, and situated between the tracks to enable non-stop rail traffic.

On top of the foundation and platforms, a growth of about 1.7million m2 of new and redeveloped space was taking place. Making it the most massive US private development in history, and cost about 25 billion dollars. Two phases were involved in the project, with the spring of 2019 marking the completion of the first phase. The primary aim was creating more space to facilitate the expansion of New York’s economy and put west-side Manhattan’s prime waterfront into good use. For example, TWIN, which is the world’s first elevator system to operate two cars in one shaft, made its debut at Hudson Yard. According to Pete Nelson, Elevator Vice President NI Sales, TWIN would enable access to more efficient use of floor space and provide tenants and building owners with significant savings in construction costs.

 

The above graph portrays Hudson Yards showing the first time and daily guests, who may comprise of tourists and the residents, as a result of incorporating the latest technology in the construction. This state of the art technology has made the area unique, including some ideas that were once considered impossible.

Selling the Hudson Yard idea to the city and stakeholders depended on attracting employees and securing the future of work. The chart below shows success in this area as the city has been able to attract employees, students, and tourists, thus securing the work’s future.

An organized city-within-a-city would ensure living, playing, and working in one place, which is most preferred by the younger generation who possess an unconventional lifestyle and work program. The graph below portrays that HudsonYards has anything and everything a person can ever need, within its walls.

Therefore, Hudson Yards comprises 4,000 office spaces, residences, recreational opportunities, more than 100 restaurants, cafes, shops, and a public school. Aside from being a mixed-use development project, Hudson Yards was developed to eliminate the need of having to leave, as everything is already available. This portrays the maximizing of space whereby ever necessary service is made available within the confirms of the city.

Hudson Yard’s half ground area is also dedicated to outdoor public space. That entails playgrounds, gardens, plazas, parks, and a unique performing arts center (The Shed).

As portrayed by New York’s development of Hudson Yards, a lot of room is still available to facilitate growth and innovation in big cities. Existing structures and assumed boundaries offer challenges, but no problems as a bit of imagination are all that’s necessary. Therefore building a new platform was all that was needed to protect existing structures and create a new, connected, smart, and sustainable neighborhood. In their venture to create more space, New York rediscovered the huge multi-level city’s potential.

Finally, a majority of people not only go through Hudson Yard but spend a lot of time as portrayed by the chart below. This shows that the space created has been used to accommodate a self-sufficient environment, thus showing great use of space.

Benefits of Hudson Yard

  • Connects the commuters- through Hudson Yards, getting from Port Authority Bus Terminal to Penn Station is achieved by walking. Also, easy access has been provided from tunnels, bridges, and major highways.
  • City favorites’ access- Hudson Yards situated near the High Line and Times Square. Which is a tourists attractions, therefore, making it a preference for hospitality projects and hotel developers.
  • Home- Hudson Yards is increasingly becoming a desirable place to live due to its proximity to other established residential neighborhoods such as Hell’s Kitchen and West Chelsea. As of 2005, over 5,600 apartments have also been created in Hudson Yard.

Conclusion

According to question 1, it is perceived that most individuals in Hudson Yards are tourists who come to view its magnificent site and structures for the first time.

This number is followed by those who visit the region daily, possibly those who live and work in the area. Question 3 also shows those who visit Hudson Yards to be mostly tourists, followed by employees and residents, and question 4 portrays those accessing the region to be mostly sightseeing and passing. This shows that the part is mainly accessed by tourists and neighbors who are there for a limited amount of time. Question 6 shows that a majority of those visiting the area stick around for an hour or more, which may be due to the number of various activities within the area that can easily attract their attention, such as Heatherwick Studio’s Vessel. Finally, question 10 shows that Hudson Yards is a self-sufficient region as almost every service is accessible within its borders. This may be due to the available playgrounds, gardens, plazas, parks, recreational opportunities, restaurants, cafes, shops, and a public school.

Hudson Yards has been able to create more space in a previously rundown area. By doing so, they have created a world’s marvel that is attracting tourists, who come to view how space was created, therefore, expanding the city’s economy. Space has been used to increase businesses and residential houses in a place that was once already developed and avoided by most. Further benefiting the created area would entail developing a research institute where further research on space creation can be conducted to promote the future expansion of other major cities. As the population continues to grow, so does the need for more space.
