Chapter 3 Notes

  1. Narrative film- this is a type of movie that tells a story. As noted in pulp fiction, Quentin Tarantino uses the film to tell several stories of criminal activities in Los Angeles.
  2. Flash-forward- is a film production technique used to present scenes in the future. For example, at the beginning of the film, the wrestler, the director, Darren Aronofsky, shows scenes that are will happen to the key actors, Rourke, in the wrestling ring.
  3. Plot- is the arrangement or interlaced sequence of events. It involves the general view of the movie in terms of places, objects, and characters. Aronofsky plots the wrestler in a fighting ring to present a true story while the pulp fiction is plotted in the contemporary American criminal streets.
  4. Story- is the chain of events arranged in a chronological order that creates a sense of smooth flow. Both films have a sequence of narratives told in chronological order.

Chapter 4 Notes

  1. Backlighting – is the illumination created onto the objects in a specific scene, mostly from the side opposite the camera. It is usually meant to develop a thin outline that improves vision. Quentin Tarantino opens the film pulp fiction with the backlighting technique as noticed when a constructive bright light covers scenes of a man wearing jeans and a Hawaiian shirt.
  2. Key light- this is the brightest illumination in every scene, usually created through a three-point lighting system.

  1. Filter – in the film pulp fiction, Quentin Tarantino reduces specific frequencies of the light of the film. This implies that he might have used a filter, which is glass to gelatin, which is placed in front of the camera to reduce the bright light reaching the film.

  2. Dissolve- is the transition within two shots. It involves the period in which an image appears and disappears. The technique is outstanding in Quentin Tarantino’s film, whereby for a moment, two different images blend.
  3. Editing- film editors do the work of editing, and it involves selecting, identifying, and joining camera takes. It entails a set of techniques that controls the connection between shots. Sally Menke, the editor of the pulp fiction, use cuts wisely to connect frames. Match cuts, and master montage editing techniques are also used.

  1. Film sound – involves the combination of music, speech, and noise in a film. Film sounds create engaging content and keep viewers awake. Pulp Fiction employ different sound pitch to convey a specific message
  2. Timbre- is the tone quality component of a film sound. The wrestler film has got a timbre tone
  3. Sonic texture- is the overall sound composition of a movie created by loudness, timbre, and pitch of a film.
  4. Blending – is the mixture of various sound techniques to manipulate the overall sonic texture of the film.
  5. Pitch- is the lowness or loudness of film sound. It relies on the frequency and rate of vibrations of the sound source.

  1. Distinctive style- are styles provided by the film producer independently
  2. Film choice- is the taste and preferences of film viewers based on dominant forms and personality.
  3. Coens- individuals decisions to make a film
  4. Group styles – ideas from many filmmakers
