deontological and the utilitarian argument regarding the permissibility of suicide

  1. Outline both the deontological and the utilitarian argument regarding the permissibility of suicide, and explain why Lachs claims that they are unconvincing.

Utilitarian theory defines acts of rights of wrongs based on what results gives overwhelming consequences whereby the one that produces most good is generated. Going with the fact that human beings are granted with a freedom of making personal decisions, the act of suicide to be morally accepted. However, it is legal if and only if the individual executing suicide have no imminent responsibilities as a parent or care giver. Deontology explains that behaviour are weighed differently from their aftermaths and that some codes of conducts are always judged morally wrong.

The deontology theory argues that life of a human being is termed to be a sacred one. This is due to the fact that existence of a human being is worthwhile and is should be cherished. Lachs claims that they are unconvincing since when committing suicide is ordained to infringe our moral responsibility to recognize the value of life of a human being. Lachs, in the deontological debate, he argues that contends that we tend to treat ourselves in an accepted manner and centrally to others, as a way in the development of an ordinary life (Guerini, Pianesi, and Stock, 2015).

  1. Explain what is meant by the claim that human life has intrinsic value, and then discuss Lee’s argument that physician-assisted suicide is immoral.

Human life has intrinsic value based in sense that our apprehension has value. The fact that life of a human being has intrinsic value is more controversial. However, it is a bit challenging to determine what sort of value that human life entails. It is not something interesting to find that one person can be of significant to another. Based on actuality that care about each other is not interesting as well. What could be interesting most is have a perception that we could show absolute intrinsic value worth being responsible not minding whether we are pragmatic to others or not. Some individuals refer to intrinsic life as a desire-independent value and objective value.

Individuals have a common belief that people have intrinsic value. It can be seen in a situation whereby we worry exposing people to miserable life or killing is taking a wrong decision even if they could probably suffer for their little time left. The Lee’s argument that suicided contributed by a physician is immoral argues that it is a way of threatening the weak and marginalized group because economic incentives as well as cultural pressures that will enhance it (Anderson, 2015).
