How to tame Indian ringneck parrot?

Do you have Indian ringneck parrots as a pet? Are you feeling difficulty in taming your Indian ringneck bird? If yes, then don’t take much tension about taming your parrot. I’ll share important as well as exciting tips to tame your parrots. It may be a challenging task to tame your parrots because parrots are very talented. But it will not be much difficult if you’ll thoroughly learn how to tame your parrot effectively. You should be very patient in this whole process because this is a very time taking task.  Some of the tips are mentioned below:

Give your parrot food with your hand:

Hand taming is a traditional method of taming parrots.  If you give your parrot food with your hand, it will be comfortable as well as familiar with your hands. It will show your affection to your parrot, and it will be soon, your friend. You will develop a strong bond with your parrot, and he will feel more secure with you.

  • Another method to tame your parrot with the hand is to place your hand where your parrot can observe it. Talking in a soothing voice may decrease his anxiety while holding hands.
  • In the first one or two weeks, try to hold your hand near the cage of your parrot. After some days, when he starts feeling comfortable with you, then place your hand in his cage. Try to avoid direct eye contact with your parrot that may frustrate or threaten him. Place your hand in his cage slowly as well as without any motion to prevent disturbance.

  • Don’t try to touch your parrot a few days when you place your hand inside his cage.
  • Place your hand inside his cage while changing utensils of food and water daily, he will be more comfortable with your hand when you make it a routine to place your hand in his cage.
  • It may take a few days, or maybe it prolongs to a few weeks to tame your parrot with your hand.
  • Try to continue talking with your parrot when your hand is inside the cage.
  • Gently teach your parrot how to move upward and downward in the cage. Create a perch with your hand and move your hand slowly in a nonthreatening way. If your parrot bites you when he steps onto your hand, say him “no” each time. One day he’ll stop biting by this command. You can use a towel or gloves if you think your parrot will bite you, and that will be painful for you. But there is a disadvantage of using this towel; your parrot may not feel comfortable with your hand due to that towel or gloves.
  • Encourage your bird to step onto your finger if he needs it.
  • Give your bird his favorite food when he steps on to your finger each time. Verbal praise is also helpful to encourage your parrot.

 Gain trust of your parrot:

It’s straightforward to say that you gain the confidence of your parrot. But its not as much comfortable as it seems to be. Your parrot will take some time to adjust to the new environment. It depends on your parrot; some parrots will take a short time to adapt, while some birds take a longer time to change in your environment.

  • Keep your parrot’s cage in the busy room. This will allow your parrot to adapt as well as to be comfortable with you. This will make him more social.
  • Don’t place your parrot in the kitchen because non-stick appliances release fumes. Fumes are fatal to parrots.

How will you get to know either your parrot is comfortable with you or not?

There is a simple trick to know whether your parrot feels secure in your house or not. If he doesn’t flutter his feathers when you try to approach your parrot, then he is feeling safe in his new environment. If he sits on his perch, it means he is not comfortable with your or the environment in your home.

Talk with your parrot in a soft tone:

Birds feel your voice tone. They don’t understand what are you talking with them, but they recognize your voice tone, either it is soft or not. It’s essential to make your parrot comfortable as well as secure when you are around him. You can gain the trust of your parrot by talking to him in a soothing tone. He can notice that you are calm and caring for him. When you change his food and water bowl, talk to him.

Use slow movements while approaching your parrot:

Sudden movements may frighten your parrot. Your slow movements will assure your parrot that you are not a threat to him. Some parrots are skittish, so you should be aware of your movements while approaching him. You should be above the eye level of your parrot when you go near him.

Too high as well too low from his eye level will make a huge impact. If you are low from his eye-level, you’ll appear to be passive while too above from his eye level may scare your parrot on your arrival. So it would be best if you chose a midway while approaching your parrot. Use a comfortable and soothing voice when you approach him to ease your parrot with your presence.

Tame your parrot to step outside his cage:

An essential part of taming the parrot is to teach him how to step out of his cage.  You have to spare a room for this training session. There should be no other pets or anything that may be hazardous for your parrot. The room should be neat and clean. You may choose a bathroom to train your parrot.

Rearrange his cage to remove him from his comfort zone. As your parrot’s cage is in the comfort zone, so it may be difficult for him to leave his comfort zone. Try to rearrange his cage in a nonthreatening manner. Just change the positions of some items in his cage.

Be patient while bringing him outside his cage. First of all, you have to place your hand inside his cage and encourage your parrot to step onto your finger.

Then slowly move your hand and bring him outside his cage. Don’t force him if he doesn’t want to leave his cage. This will take some time to leave his comfort zone. Train him daily almost for ten to twenty minutes, and don’t forget to reward him with a treat after each successful session.

After each training session, move your parrot inside his cage in an effective manner. Place his back in his cage first. Then place him on any perch. Only close the door of his cage when he is comfortable in the cage.

Conclusion:

Taming your parrot is not a difficult task if you learn how to do it. It would help if you waited for some time for the proper taming of your parrot. Ensure your parrot that you are not any threat to him and provide him a comfortable environment. Spend time with him and talk to him gently to attain his attention. This guide will help you to tame your parrot in less time and in an effective manner.
