We are currently living in a world that depends on technology to perform most tasks in our day to day lives. Thousands of information are transferred every day, in offices, hospitals, schools and banks. Moreover, most process of moving data depend on quality and quantity. Sharing data may also be optional or may depend on the type of data that is to be shared, the source of funding, and the nature of the organization. Sharing information is beneficial because it provides a more natural way to increase the service of delivery across a broader market. Publishing data is also an easy way to introduce interested people in projects. Moreover, transparency is something that government is encouraged to do while sharing public data. Despite this benefits of sharing data, It is easy for some information to get lost or fall into the wrong hands. Most of these transfer protocols lack enough security that can protect the data been transferred. This ends up causing damage that is difficult to fix.
Facebook is one of the social media platforms that has been exposed for its lack of data privacy. It is one of the largest social media networks, with nearly 1.5 billion users daily. Facebook had been accused of allegedly sharing information to another website such an amazon, apple and Microsoft. When signing up for a Facebook account one gives personal details such as full name, date of birth and current residing location. Facebook is facing a backlash for sharing this information with other companies without the user’s permission. Facebook has proven to breach personal users data and lacks to put up policies that will help protect users data. Moreover, it is easy for one to share data on facebook unknowingly. Such data might be personal and damages someone’s life. The lack of privacy on Facebook can cause damaging personal information to fall into the wrong hands. One type of personal information that can ruin someone’s life is personal medical data.
Technology has changed over the years, allowing one hospital to collect health data of the patients and also store them. The same information is also shared to the patient in order i keep them updated on the health progress. Other information such as the lifestyle of the patient, eating habits, travelling life and other factors that may affect health. This information is essential to doctors because it can be used to review previous medical problems. Genetic data is also readily available to hospitals to help in the diagnosis of patients. However, there has been a concern for the data that is stored electronically. Such adat can be easily hacked, be lost or fall into the wrong hands. When such personal information falls into the wrong hands, it can be damaging to a person’s life. Patients agree that health records can only be shared with other medical institutions for medical purposes. Outside the hospitals, patients expect that this information should be kept confidential.
Moreover, a patient or a doctor can unknowingly share medical information to the wrong platform causing problems for the hospital and also the patient. One negative of such a mistake is that the patient may lack insurance because it will be assumed that the patient is using pathos emotion to reach out to insurance companies. Sharing and exposing medical records could cause discrimination in the work society and also in workplaces. Data such as medical bills can also cause harm to patients because the financial status may be exposed to community. Medical records also involve genetic documents which may expose the medical condition of the entire family. Technology needs to come up with a way that will give control of the medical records only to the patient.
