Games of Thrones review
In all the eight seasons of the Games of Thrones, the stories give significant life lessons. Although the scenes depict plots on sexuality, gore, twists of life, there are undoubtedly good teaching moments from the film. The movie shows different characters and their quest for power and ways to survive in a somewhat chaotic and unpredictable life. One essential life lesson that we can gather from the film is the psychological insight into why we should embrace our identity. Tyrion quoted, “Never forget what you are the rest of the world will not wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.” The phrase was to demystify the fact that we should embrace our cultural heritage as it is the best thing to do. Tyrion was advising Jon Snow that he needs to remember his royal roots and disregard the notion that he is a bastard. Similarly, the quote applies in my life about not forgetting my culture, beliefs, and traditions.
The experience of watching the movie and seeing how the quote has been used has opened my eyes to the importance of embracing one’s culture and identifying with it. In the film, Tyrion inspired Jon to stick to the ways of his tradition and identify with his people. Jon was able to embrace his culture and held to his obligations as the true heir of the crown. Still, he never abandoned his cultural identity from the stark’s family where he was raised. For this reason, Jon was keen to save the north from the invasion of the nightwalkers. Had he not identified with his people; he would not have liberated the seven kingdoms from the mad queen. As an heir to the crown, he is entitled to power and to commit to what the throne requires. In as much as he was in fear of being caught for having the royal blood, he understands the right thing for him to do.
In the same way, the quote is relevant teaching about preserving one’s cultural heritage. Being different from the rest of the other people around you can feel odd. Just like Jon, no one wants to feel like an outcast, so people tend to conform to what everyone else does. In one instance, I had travelled in a culturally different country for a short course. The language was different from mine, which made try and master it in a short time. I was in fear of being stereotyped for being different. Nonetheless, the advantage was that I was able to speak my language and the new one at the same time. However, after watching the movie, I was inspired to appreciate my heritage and embrace it. It was inspiring to learn that being different gave me the chance to introduce my culture to other people. I was able to help others appreciate my traditions, which may have been misunderstood.
The quote is an essential lesson for people to embrace one’s cultural identity, norms, beliefs and bloodlines. Taking a deeper appreciation of one’s culture gives a person the courage and pride in engaging in the ways of their people. Jon was courageous enough to defend his people, as this was what was expected of him. I have also learnt to do things based on the values impacted by my culture. All in all, the quote teaches people never to forget who they are and the values instilled in them because they are for their good.
