Fishing has been one of the best income earners for many individuals, especially along the lakeside. In addition, the Kawhia-Aotea Taiapure – established in 2000 – guarantees Maori of better access to local fisheries, and recognizes them as the guardians.

Raukura Hauora O Tainui, famously known as the Iwi charitable fund, is an organization that was founded in 1991. Its establishment came as an aspiration of king Tawhiao to reclaim the welfare of people of Tainui. The organization aims at providing a wide range of services such as community health care services, at a cost affordable to the prevailing community members. In the course of achieving the organization’s objectives, the firm works for hand in hand with the Waitangi settlement scheme. Waitangi settlements aim at creating employment opportunities for Maori graduates, where Iwi strives to develop strong commercial ties within fisheries, education, and insurance services. For instance, they develop a treaty in 2000 that ensured all the seven tribes of Maori participated in signing the Sealord treaty that guaranteed continued growth and establishment if the tribes within the fisheries industry, thus the possibility of an improved life.
