implication of different leadership styles on nursing practice
Introduction
Leadership is exceedingly essential to the effectiveness and stability of the clinical practice. A comparative analysis of leadership styles is crucial for understanding the leadership phenomenon and how leadership characteristics, skills, and competencies related to the task assigned (Khai & Nawaz, 2016; Kazmi, 2017). By comparing and contrasting the leadership and management styles of leaders and non-leaders and then synthesizing the outcome of such an analysis through the lens of a reflective process, it becomes possible to conceptualize the ultimate leadership model and how it related to nursing practice. In this paper, a critical analysis of a nursing leadership figure, a non-leader, and me as a leader was done. Ultimately, the aim is to explore the implication of different leadership styles on nursing practice.
Leadership: a working definition
Before delving deep into the analysis of various leadership and management styles, it was essential to come up with a working definition of the term ‘leadership.’ A review of the literature indicated a general lack of consensus in the definition of the term (Fischer, 2016; Grint, Jones, Holt, & Storey, 2016). Generally, leadership involves motivating members of a given team towards the achievement of a specific set of goals (Almaki, Silong, Idris, Wahat, 2016). According to Rickards, and Moger (2017), leadership involves inspiring others to pursue targets based on set parameters and the degree to which such a process becomes a shared vision, effort and success. Tedeschi, Schlenker, and Lindskold (2017), on the other hand, defines leadership as a process involving social influence which optimizes the efforts of a team towards the achievement of a given goal. The working definition, therefore, was that; leaders are skilled individuals with the knowledge and skills for inspiring others towards the achievement of a set of goals.
