Bullying in learning institutions
Bulling is one of the most common social issues in the world. It can be defined as the use of power or force to harm those who are weaker, young, or smaller by nature. It’s not born or made, and it always happens at a young age, usually from 12 years to 18 years. Most bullying happens in schools, and statistics show that in the United States from grade 6 to grade 12, almost a quarter of the students experience bullying. (Kowalski et al., 2017) The three types of bullying are social, verbal, and physical, which mostly affect school children, and it also happens on social media sites. Bullying can lead to depression, isolation, rejection, and suicidal thoughts. This has become a significant problem in learning institutions and hence there several campaigns which have been started to stop this kind of issue.
Physical bullying is, using one’s body to hurt other people, and examples are kicking, punching, pushing, spitting, taking other people’s properties by force, and lastly, is using mean gestures towards others. This is the most violent form of bullying, as it can lead to severe fighting and injuries. (Kowalski et al., 2017) This form of violence can happen anywhere; in schools, workplaces, and also in social events. Mostly in such situations, there usually security men allocated to stop this once it occurs.
Another form of bullying is verbal, where mean and rude words are used to invoke others. Examples include calling of names, threatening to cause harm, making fun of someone, irritating sexual comments, and lastly, threats to cause physical damage. This form of bullying is always intended to hurt others emotionally and also to demean them. It can also lead to depression and low self-esteem because of the mean words thrown at them. Social bullying is also another type of bullying. This is also known as cyberbullying, and it involves harassing someone online. Electronic devices such as phones are used to commit this kind of bullying. Social media sites used for this are Instagram, Facebook, messenger, twitter, and phone calls. They include embarrassing someone in public or spreading lousy information about someone. Actions have been taken to stop this type of bullying because it is hazardous.
Bullying is perpetrated by people in positions of authority, for example, parents, employers, and sometimes even peers. Some employers tend to harass their workers through harsh threats, denial of off days from work, too much monitoring as if one is a kid, and lastly, warnings about being laid off. (Salmivalli et al., 2018) One can also receive bullying from other employees in the office. Examples include being left out on office culture; another instance can be when you enter the room. Other employees remain quiet or can leave the office. All these can affect someone at work, both performance-wise and self-esteem reduction.
Also, some parents practice bullying without their knowledge. There are emotional and mental bullying parents who use demeaning speech towards their children. This can damage the mental of a child since they will remain to think that they are not good enough. Some children can also fall into depression because of this. Additionally, there are cyberbullying parents. This happens when parents try to post pictures for other people online and to say mean things about them. They try to expose those parents who have committed bullying their children through posting their pictures. (Salmivalli et al., 2018) Instead of them protecting their children, they end up becoming bullies themselves.
Lastly is about peers and how they administer bullying to others. This happens mostly in schools where those children who are a bit older are definite try to harass those who are weaker and also younger. Some children who come from violent families try to emulate this and practice on others at school. So to end this parents should be aware of this type of bullying and try to educate their kids against bullying at schools
Additionally, other factors also contribute to bullying, and these are age and sex. Older people tend to bully those who are younger than them simply because they feel like they are more superior. (Kowalski et al., 2017) Some older people don’t give young people a chance on the table to express themselves, and this happens even in places of work or social events. And even when they are given an opportunity to express their ideas, they are not taken seriously. Additionally, also, older people who are violent tend to involve in a fight with the young when they are offended. This is also a form of bullying as all people, whether young or old, should be given equal opportunities and respect.
Sex is also another significant factor contributing to violence in society. Some men come from organizations that believe men are more superior to women. This why some men don’t give their women a chance to express themselves, and they feel like they are supposed to give orders always. (Salmivalli et al., 2018) Also, in a lot of marriages, we find men who beat up and harass their women simply because they have been raised to believe that that kind of violence is ok.
Additionally, this type of gender violation is also seen in places of work that involve leadership. Men tend to be given leadership roles because society has been advised to believe that only men can take such a position. The community believes that a woman cannot play a leadership role because they are weak. This form of violence is so unfair, and programs have been put across to support gender-equal.
In addition to that, there are forms of social issues that promote violence in society. One is that the community has been advised to believe that men are supposed to be physically strong; they always thought to provide. This notion of men thought to be strong is what has led to those who are weaker to be bullied. The affected ones here are women, children, and other weak men. Also, to add to that, the issue of men are supposed to provide been a significant concern in today’s society. (Juvonen et al., 2014) Things have changed, and you will find some men in marriages with no jobs, but they undergo the pressure of providing. Their women cannot understand this because they have been raised to believe that a man is supposed to provide no matter the situation. Even when a wife still has her job, he will always not use her money to provide. Women should understand that men are also human, and sometimes they might not be able to offer. During these challenging times, they are supposed to cheap in for their men and also support them morally and emotionally to avoid them falling into depression.
Also, another form is where some women are assumed to be pretty than others. These have affected the self-esteem of those who feel that they are not pretty. (Juvonen et al., 2014) When you go to places of work or even events, the pretty ones tend to be given opportunities or more attention, respectively. This unfair because the ones who are not treated as being pretty are affected emotionally, and it lowers their self-esteem. In addition to that, all women are supposed to be processed equally regardless of their outlook. They are all made in the image of God.
In conclusion, bullying has occurred to be the main form of social issues affecting society. Programs and campaigns have been put in place to reduce this form of violence. The programs like National research council and the institute of medicine (NRCI) have been put in place to reduce bullying. The main aim is to study the mental health of those involved in bullying and find a way on how to assist them.
