Final Project Written Presentation Outline and Literature Review Worksheet

Prompt: To complete your final project, you will need to create a well-researched presentation based on current research and debates surrounding your topic. The presentation will include a technical overview of the item and a summary arguments for and against the problem with supporting evidence.

For Milestone Two, you will submit a written outline of your presentation using this worksheet to help you develop your performance. You will receive feedback from the instructor. Be sure to complete both Part 1 and Part 2.

PART 1: Written Presentation Outline

For each of the four sections below, provide a written paragraph (5–7 sentences) summarizing your research and outlining what information you plan to use in your presentation.

  1. Technical Overview (This will be information for 2–3 slides)

In this section, provide background about the topic. Provide an overview of the item in general, answering the following questions: How does it work? What is the purpose? How is technology applied to the real world?

Overview:  My topic, designer babies, is not something that has been around for a long time. Parents used not to know if their child(ren) would inherit anything passed down to them like diseases, hair or eye colour from the mother, father or a mix of both. We would only know if we were having a boy or a girl. A designer baby is a baby that has been genetically modified. The parents can make sure their child has a particular hair or eye colour, if they want a boy or girl and even make sure their child does not inherit any diseases or medical problems that the parents or family members have that can be passed down. The purpose of a designer baby is that now parents can make a child that has no problems and is the perfect, or dream child, that they had been wanting. [unique_solution]

  1. Summary of Arguments for the Topic (This will be information for 2–3 slides)

Summarize the research that supports your topic. In this section, provide facts and avoid personal bias. Present a factual overview of the benefits of the item and how it enhances human life. If you were to argue for the support of the topic, what information would you provide to educate people on the subject?

Arguments: Designer babies are becoming the future of our future children and how they are being made. Besides being able to choose your child’s hair colour and eye colour, you can change and decide other things. Some of the benefits of Designer babies are reducing the risks of genetic diseases, reducing the risk of inheriting medical conditions, you can give the child genes the parents do not have/carry and an increased life span.

  1. Summary of Arguments Against the Topic (This will be information for 2–3 slides)

Summarize the research that refutes your topic. In this section, provide facts and avoid personal bias. Present a factual overview of the pitfalls of the item and how it negatively impacts human life. If you were to argue against the topic, what information would you provide to educate people on the subject?

Arguments: Having the ability to “design your child” have cons that not many people think about that can harm you and the child lives. There can be a chance of damaging the gene pool since you will be changing your child’s genes that may not be yours. Your child might not be individual because you changed who they are because you want them to be that way/look like that. If you have other children already, they could be affected because the “designer” child will most likely look different and be different than it’s siblings. Also, the baby(child) has no say or choice to being changed. Maybe they would not like to have been designed if they find out they are.

  1. Current Perspectives on Your Topic (This will be information for 2–3 slides)

In this section, provide a general overview of the prevailing attitudes about your topic. Consider current research areas and ethical issues. What is the current view in the media? Are there new rules or laws being considered in the United States? To get started, consult reliable news sources (e.g., CNN, New York Times, your local news) and search for your topic.

Overview: While looking through the news and media, some people believe that being able to “design” our children is a good thing. People think that being able to eliminate some disadvantages like diseases or being passed down a particular gene. They also believe that we will be able to provide our child to be able to have strong muscles or even be tall or short instantly.

But there are also the ones who are not for this to be happening. They do not believe that a child should be designed. Just because the child is not even born yet and cannot consent does not mean we can just go in and change them to how we would want them to be.
