Othello by Shakespeare

William Hazlitt describes the character of Lago as supererogation of Shakespeare skills. He has a love of power with is common and natural to man. Lago is Othello’s ensign and the villain of the play. He is an extreme instance of kindness which is true in the story as he bluffs in his honesty making people to trust him including his master Othello (Shakespeare). He spends most of his time plotting against Desdemona and Othello, in which case he eventfully convinces Othello of his wife cheating habits, despite the fact that his wife was faithful. He cruelty is unjust, and no motivation would describe the level of unjust to his friends. William describes this as a plot to destroy his friends as a plot for his ingenuity.

Lago enjoys destroying people lives. He does this with the highest level of craftsmanship. He appreciates every plot of evil he makes and his final results. Every time he does something genially evil he will stand and muse about, “Virtue? A fig! ‘Tis in ourselves that we are thus or
Thus. Our bodies are our gardens, to the which our wills are gardeners.”
(1.3.361-368). We tend to have the perception that evil is oblivious and ruthless or keeps us from the people we hurt. Lago, on the other hand, can ruin Othello’s life because he is close to him. His plots grow stronger as he gets close to Othello. At some point, he gets to manipulate him to the extent that you could think he was on his head.

According to William Hazlitt, the characters of Othello and Lago is like black and white. Othello from the onset is a hero and a protagonist. He begins by being the noble person who is respected by everybody around him; He ends up being a violent, irrational and jealous husband who ends up murdering his wife after being convinced by Lago that Desdemona was cheating. Being a Moor and the general of the armies, he has no rage in even in the battlefields (RicKnowles). However, he is rage goes beyond with the feeling of being betrayed which brings the coherent nature that pushes him to murder his wife. William describes this as a noble blood but of an inflammable kind. The character of Othello is dependent on Lago who is the focus of the play. We could argue that he is the main character of the play if he could undergo changes.

Desdemona is the daughter of the Venetian senator Brabanzio. Her character is described by William as a unique in its self. She is a victim of innocence. She has a happy wit and naïve behavior which she reveals when she comes to terms with Othello’s jealousy. She does not grasp the fact that he wants her to drop the topic of Cassio which was a go-between to Othello when they were wooing. She does not lose her temper even when humiliated publicly.

Desdemona’s character dominates her personality. She seems to judge other ladies by her standards. She is not able to comprehend that other women may act otherwise contrary to her actions. Desdemona’s timidity and boldness according to William Hazlitt are all in filled in one person. She is capable of standing up to her husband when her honor is in question. On her deathbed, she does not accept of her fallen false guilt. To her last breath, she tries to vindicate Othello of her murder.
