Mozart Symphony no. 40 in G minor K. 550, first movement
Mozart Symphony no. 40 in G minor K. 550, first movementThe first part of the project is to make a structural diagram that clearly shows the major sections and themes of the piece, their measure numbers, their keys, and their proportions. The diagram should be as detailed as possible (you should account for every modulation, but not every tonicization). Once you have diagrammed the piece you should have a good understanding of its form. At that point you should make an outline of the points you want to discuss in the written paper. The second part of the project is a short (3-4 pages) prose desсrіption of various aspects of the piece. Part of the process of analysis is knowing what questions to ask about a piece – in other words figuring out what is important in a particular piece. What is important to discuss in the analysis of one piece might not be important for another piece. You must determine for yourself what is important to discuss in analyzing the piece you choose. Issues you may wish to discuss include, but are not limited to the following:[unique_solution] Relation of materials. What unifying features do you find in the piece? How ″tightly″ is the piece constructed? Is material reused? If so, how is it altered? Development of thematic and motivic material. What developmental processes does the composer employ? Is the development section the only section where development takes place? Be specific and cite examples. Harmonic structure. Is the tonal structure reflected on various levels of the piece, and if so, how? Some examples of the types of questions you might ask: Is the key of the second theme somehow prepared in the first theme? How does the choice of key for the second theme prepare what follows? Does the composer try to ″fool″ you by suggesting keys other than the tonic, or by bringing back a theme in the ″wrong″ key? Etc. Unusual structural features. How does the form of the piece compare to what we would consider a typical example of Sonata form? What significant differences do you find, and what role do they play in the structure of the piece? Are any sections or themes omitted or abbreviated? If so, what impact does this have on the piece? Is the piece strictly in Sonata form, or do you find that it suggests other forms as well? Structural dimensions. How do the sections of the piece compare in size and in importance? Is there an introduction and/or a coda? How do their harmonic structures relate to the rest of the piece? How do they affect the dimensions of the piece? Are these sections of equal importance to the main body of the piece? Why or why not? Beyond these, you may find other issues worthy of discussion. In any case you should focus on those issues that are most relevant to the piece, those aspects that are important to its sense of functionality and that make it unique. In short, what makes the piece work?
