Consciousness

Understanding

Consciousness refers to a person’s state of awareness of their sensations, feelings, thoughts, and their environment. consciousness is experienced when an individual is both awake and aware of situations happening around them. The current body of literature about consciousness revolves around developing insights into what the term means both psychologically and biologically. Similarly, the modern concept of consciousness is usually perceived as a person’s awareness of their individual internal states in addition to the events unfolding around them. In essence, it is the ability to describe, the events that an individual experiences. However, the term is usually confused with an individual’s conscience. While conscience is related to a person’s perception of what is wrong or right, consciousness entails one’s awareness of themselves around the world. In attempts to understand the role of conscious versus unconscious processing, psychologists are concerned about the degree to which the conscious about their actions influences their behavior. As such, psychological theories have shown that most of an individual’s behavior is by the variable that they are unaware of.

The film White Christmas explores the consequences of ostracization and loneliness. It enlightens the viewer on the need to use their consciousness adequately in preventing unfavorable behavior and actions. The movie takes Google Glass to an incredible level wherein people have Z-eye implants that allow them to have control over what they see as well as share these experiences with others. Despite having these benefits, new technology affects people’s consciousness, and it soon faces critics about how it affects human relationships. Likewise, the implants are also integrated with a recording device that allows the users to re-watch, rewind, and revisit moments in one’s life. Nevertheless, this technology affects people’s consciousness in both negative and positive ways. For instance, such a level of consciousness could allow people to revisit the mistakes they made in the past and hence plan effectively for their desired expectation. On the contrary, revisiting some heartful moments in one’s past could lead to loneliness and isolation, which could culminate in serious mental conditions.

Culture and Ethics

The experience of consciousness plays a vital role in guiding and controlling behavior in addition to helping people think logically about problems. Likewise, consciousness helps individuals in planning activities in addition to monitoring their progress towards predetermined goals. It also has a fundamental role in facilitating an individual’s sense of morality, whereby we tend to feel that we have the free will to avoid immoral behavior while performing moral actions. Nonetheless, in other instances, consciousness is likely to become aversive, especially when one is aware that they are not living up to their expectations.

Knowledge

Over the years, psychologists have sought to examine the role of consciousness in individual’s lives. They have developed various psychological theories to differentiate between conscious and unconscious elements of individual behavior. Today, psychologists establish the distinction between controlled (conscious) and automatic (unconscious) behavior in addition to explicit (conscious) memory and implicit (unconscious memory. More so, in their theories, psychologists focus on addressing the question regarding the presence of a free will. According to Sigmund Freud’s personality theories, even though individuals may perceive that their actions and behavior are influenced by forced outside their awareness-or the unconscious sense. They tend to believe that they do not have absolute control over these forces, although they are aware that they are engaging in most of their behaviors.

Application

From the time I wake up, consciousness drives my conduct throughout the day. In most of my mornings, I am usually attentive and energetic towards mid-afternoon. In the afternoons, I become weary and lose concentration. Consciousness helps me to determine how effective I will carry out tasks in the morning compared to my afternoons.
