A narcissistic personality disorder
A narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disease-infested in one’s importance that makes one superior over others in a given environment. It involves the need for excessive admiration and attention towards oneself with the lack of compassion towards others. In most cases, most narcissists cause problems in the work environment, relationships, school, and social affairs. Therefore, this paper talks about narcissism and explores the role of narcissism in the motives and usage of different social media platforms, especially Facebook and Twitter. According to Shaun W. Davenport et al., (2014) research, the most popular social network sites used by the narcissist are Facebook and Twitter. In this regard, the two platforms link millennial narcissists to share and tag their views and feelings towards an object or an individual. Facebook has over seven hundred and fifty million users per month, while twitter has two hundred and fifty million users per month. The reason behind the disparities between the usages of these two platforms is because comments and views on twitter are less understandable compared to Facebook.
The research depicted college students and adults concerning social network sites. In this prospect, the tests provided different results in the sense that twitter was a significant predictor of narcissism compared to Facebook styles of a status update. This analogy described that most narcissists prefer followers on their twitter handles and despise updating status on their bio on Facebook. Therefore, the significant relationship to social network sites by a narcissist is not to keep other individuals up to date but to post one’s perception of himself or herself that makes others inferior. On the other hand, the research established that college narcissist prefers the use of twitter while adults prefer Facebook. In most cases, people are related to twitter due to their tweets, and one can acquire followers through tweets while Facebook uses friend requests which, is more comfortable to narcissism compared to twitter.
The variations between the use of Facebook and twitter among narcissists begets critique reflection on the diagnostic criteria influenced by the use of these two platforms. In this case, college students who prefer using twitter to Facebook have an imposing sense of self-importance in the mind that they want to be recognized as superior over adult narcissist Facebook users. These college students believe that the use of Facebook is past their time, and most adults who use Facebook grew up when Facebook was the only social network site. On the other hand, adult narcissist using Facebook believe that the social network site is engrossed with fantasies in the sense that other individuals view and comment on a narcissist power, success, beauty, and brilliance even if those individuals are looked down upon by narcissists.
Narcissist twitter users also believe that they are unique and that people of their caliber and status should understand them. As described earlier, twitter social network is less understood compared to Facebook; therefore, those who use twitter associate themselves with those in the same social status or platform where they can be followed. In most cases, these narcissists perceive that they are the best among other individuals while tweeting abbreviations such as G.O.A.T, meaning Greatest of all time. On the contrary, Facebook gives a platform where one can easily show off through pictures. In this case, adult narcissists always require excessive admiration from other individuals in the sense that they always post boastful and proud pictures of themselves or their belongings especially, cars, wealth, and money on Facebook social network site. This narrative shows that those using Facebook as a social network have a sense of entitlement, making one comply with his or her expectations towards the narcissist automatically. Therefore, these two social network platform brings out personalities of the narcissist in the contemporary world today.
