Union representation is the act of defending the interests of the employees in an organization or a company. The formation of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) sparked the beginning of a continuous large scale labor movement in the United States. During the 20th century, the crafts unions lost their superiority to industrial unions. It was a historical as well as a controversial shift since the earlier associations were developed to represent skilled workers. In 1935, the AFL opposed the plans to organize the unskilled and expelled a group of members who attempted to organize the group. The expelled members formed the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). By 1941, CIO had ensured the success of industrial unionism through the organization of the steel and automobile industries. Right-to-work laws were eventually formulated in the 20th and 21st centuries. These laws protect the economic liberty of workers. Moreover, other economic libertarians’ states adopted legislation to limit collective bargaining and the right to strike by public-sector unions.

Advantages of trade unions
