Crazy all the time is a book written by Frederick L. Covan who is a psychologist at Bellevue Hospital in New York. It talks about conditions and the running of the psychiatric ward in the hospital. It greatly talks about the patients and people in and around the hospital. This is in terms of their characters, behaviors and their activities they carry on. Some of the characters are workers, interns, doctors and even patients admitted in the hospital. Some of these characters involved in the flow of the book are as follows; Mr. Paul Trent, Mr. Gary, Gloria Nadller, Freudian, Fred, Barry, Maggie, David Anderson, Chris Mueller, Brenda Colman and Inez. Mr. Trent is a patient admitted to the hospital, Gloria Nadller is a dermatologist in the hospital and Fred is a homosexual addict admitted in the hospital while Maggie is the secretary in the hospital. David Anderson is an intern taking his duties in the hospital, Chris Mueller is a student who failed in his careers and engaged in crime and Inez is a AIDS patients in the hospital. She contracted the disease from her husband. On the other hand Brenda Colman is paranoid schizophrenic in the hospital. Some of the DSM diagnosis of the characters is as discussed below.
Paul Trent is a patient admitted to the hospital due to a various mental problems. Some of these mental disorders are as follows; neurodevelopment disorder which is characterized by development deficit in some aspects such as personal social, academic and occupational dealings in day to day routine. This disorder reoccurs and ceases sometimes as seen in the patient who tends to be actually normal sometimes in his activities. Another disorder associated with this patient is the bipolar disorder. This disorder is mainly concerned with the family history. The patient seems to be extremely not in moods which are traced back from his family. This is so because some of his relatives have been admitted in the hospital under the same condition. The patient is always unhappy and does not at all like socializing with people which is a sign of the condition. Furthermore, Paul is still under depressive disorder. He seems to be stressed all the time. This is indicated in his behaviors such as not being interested in any activity. He goes ahead to talk only about the negative issues in the life. Brenda Colman is a paranoid schizophrenic who believes that the government and other agencies are out to get her. She still has several mental disorders. Some of the disorders she is under are discussed below. She is suffering from schizophrenia spectrum. This disorder is concerned with abnormalities in the following conditions; delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and thinking abnormal motor behavior and negative thoughts. Brenda Colman always talks of abnormal and unseen things which surprise everyone in the hospital. She is even seen doing some actions which lack a good source and a reason to carry out. It’s very difficult for her to organize her ideas and present herself to people by just lacking confidence to do so. She has negative thoughts always which are concerned with harming herself and her colleagues. She is still suffering from psychotic disorder which is a mental disorder which interferes with attitude of somebody. This is indicated by her situation of seeing everything impossible. She lacks self-confidence to carry out activities by taking every task to hard to carry on. In such condition she is unable to carry out day to day activities hence ends achieving nothing in day’s tasks which in turn lead poor performance in every task.
Chris Mueller who is a student who failed in his careers is affected with various mental disorders due to these tough conditions and challenges he is passing through. One of these disorders affecting him is anxiety which enhances fear and behavioral disturbances to him. He is always scared and worried about life. This makes him not to have passion and motivation in life at all. This makes him to spend all the time sleeping and staying in depressive mood. In this mood he is not able to associate with her colleagues in the hospital. This also leads to him to have periodic panic attacks. He is also going through trauma disorder. This is a stressing disorder which inhibits social engagement. This hinders him all the time to associate and socialize with people. He spends most of the time alone and lonely and avoids groups of people. He is always in lack interest in any aspect of life. He is still always in sad situation and not happy to anyone which may lead to harm to the rest of the people. This is well illustrated because he us always focused on the bad moments of his life.
He is also under dissociative disorder. It is concerned with disruption in the normal integration of the memory. He is not able follow up his activities due to lack of memory coordination. This greatly disrupts his psychological functions and makes hard for him to make decisions in the right manner. This disorder also hinders his ability to think and remember issues masking it difficult for him to run day to day tasks in the correct manner. This is so because he always forgets on very simple and minor issues in every activity.
Inez is an AIDS patient who contracted the disease from her husband. This disease leads her to be very stressed in life and lack any motivation in life. She is always starving herself because she thinks no one sees her importance. This is because she thinks the only thing ahead of her is only death. In order for her to eat her daughter comes to visit her and ensure that she eats for survival. In absence of the daughter she never consumes anything hence the daughter has to visit her on daily basis. She is suffering from feeding and eating disorders. This disorder is characterized by the following; disturbances in eating and consumption rate. It also leads to her experiencing anorexia. Due to lack of eating she is getting weak and losing weight. She is also has a low immune system which leads to her contracting many different disease. Inez is also suffering from sexual dysfunction. This leads to lack of sexual interest in the person affected. She is not interested at all in sex. This may be resulting from her emotional stress and lack of future focusing in her life. She always takes sex as a inhibited practice in life and a situation which always causes death and stress. She is always lonely and spends most of her time alone in stressful mood. This enhances her to lack interest and positive attitude in life. She is always talking of how life is so hurting. She sees life being of no importance at all.
David Anderson is an intern in the hospital. He is still under some mental related disorders. Some of these disorders are as indicated below. He is suffering from personality disorder. This disorder is an inner experience disorder that that is related to pones culture and style of carrying out duties. It may have adverse effects especially in adolescence stage. It mainly leads to distress and impairment. This leads to him lack commitment in his duties and also lack of focus. He is also under disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders. This involves problems in self-control in emotions and personal behaviors. He is unable to control some of his emotions and behaviors which in turn lead to him having differences with the other people. This makes hi coordination with people difficult. He engages in various behaviors which violates the rights of other people. This comes well with his behavior of being harsh to people. This shows lack respect to others and hence leads to lack of association and interaction with people.
The hospital deals well with its patients hence treatment and healing of the patients is efficient. This is done through proper examining of the patients, proper interaction with them, proper attendance and well equipped systems to deal with the conditions. This enhances well running and coordination in the treatment process of the patients. Many of the patients come out of the hospital in a better condition and improve on their life styles.
