Introduction
A literacy practice is any activity that people do in their daily lives and is mostly demonstrated using a written language. Most of these practices usually involves attitudes, feelings and social relationships. An out –of –the- classroom activity is any practice that is done when one is not in the classroom. Most of the Out-of-the-Classroom activities usually utilize the knowledge gained in the classroom but they allow our minds to be creative and think big so as to better and apply what our tutors teach us inside the classroom. It is also important to note that literacy practices are part of family social practices and are best exemplified by a fictive storytelling and characterized by their conventions and constitutive concepts. They as well use literature so as to get the best meaning. In this paper, I will talk about reading and writing fun fiction as my out- of –the-classroom literacy practice and the role which they play in my life.
It is said that experience is the best teacher, and I confirm that this is the plain truth, based on my own life experiences. As a child, I have undergone through a vast process of gaining knowledge from the class, not only from the teachers but also from my own interest to befriend books and other reading materials. This has enabled me to well undergo through my childhood development hence growing up as a knowledgeable person. Nevertheless, the efforts of my parents in ensuring that I always stayed connected to books cannot be underestimated. They have taught me how to read and writer and above all, they have built my knowledge and understanding about the importance of reading and writing as well as developing good skills towards the same. Writing refers to the activity or the skill of composing a text or making coherent words on paper, or simply putting something on paper, as our teacher used to refer it to. On the other hand, reading refers to the action of studying or perusing a written matter either silently or loudly and then interpreting so as to achieve knowledge through understanding. In my case, I like writing about fiction because I create them through my own imaginations, hence I have the freedom to describe events vividly. Although I am a fan of many things, I like writing about dilemma stories.
Reading fan books stimulated my imagination since my early days. The importance of this is that, it enabled me to best understand the word and how things that make it work collaboratively in order to bring life sustenance. Driven by this, I could not let any material that came my way go unread. To my education also, reading helped me develop language and listening skills thus preparing me to understand any written word. This is what taught me how to write.
Reading and writing fan fiction books has enabled me to reduce stress. At times, the class has not always been the best place for me to be, as compared to the library. This is because our teachers sometimes discipline us through the hard way. If befallen by that tragedy, I find reading as the best thing for me to reduce those stress and go on with my life. Even when the same happen at home, the best place for me to visit is my study room, where I sit and communicate with the books and the pen so as to avoid punishments from my parents, whilst expanding my memory.
Reading and writing fan fiction has promoted my learning process by enabling me to develop good analytical skills. Through reading especially, I am in a position to analyze events and come up with conclusions based on the same events. Also, writing has enabled me to develop observation skills because in most cases, I am required to do writing based on what I see. Nevertheless, it has enabled me to develop creative skills of analyzing situations. Nevertheless, it is said that an idle mind is a devil workshop and thus this is something that I have avoided through treading and writing of fan fiction stories. When I am not in the classroom, I am playing with my colleagues in the field. If I am not that, I am helping my parents with their work but above all, I spend most of my leisure time reading and writing fan books that I take to school for my friends and teachers to see.
In my learning process, reading fanfiction stories has enabled me to develop social skills of staying and interacting with people and through this way, it has enabled me to learn from other people. It has also enabled me to understand the cultures of people and their evolution over time. Most importantly, reading has made me a better person in the society because up to date, they still teach me the norms of the society and how I am supposed to live.
Writing has formed an important part of my communication skills. It is well known a good communication creates a shared understanding. I am therefore in a position to pass my massage to where I need and have my needs satisfied. It has also improved my imagination skills and this has made me ensure that whatever I put down on paper will bear positive results. However, I pride myself because the same imagination skills have been developed through extensive reading of different materials.
Writing and reading have shaped my education by enabling me achieve my dreams. Through reading, I have learnt that we go to school to gain knowledge so that we can see the future ahead of us. Being knowledgeable about this, reading has prepared me for job opportunities and that is why I am earning from books. Also, writing has enabled me to write down some application letters and express my qualifications. Therefore, reading and writing fanfiction is a vital skill of finding a good job.
Fan fiction reading has played a meaningful role in my life by moving me to a different world. It moves me from the real world to the word of imagination which is unreal, though interesting. In that world, I can see and feel the presence of things. This equips me with ideas on what I should write about. Also, I have had a dream that one day I would be earning my living through my words and this has been achieved. I have made a discovery that most people have developed a special liking towards dilemma stories because it builds suspense that strengthens their will to keep on reading.
Conclusion
In conclusion, reading and writing especially fan fiction books is an indicator to a high student achievement. It facilitates mind development and enables us to discover new things in life. Good reading skills improves the spellings and thus making people to write sensibly. It has improved my vocabulary as well as my empathy. Reading has enabled me to feel more connected to people whilst enabling me to reach a greater tranquility. It has shaped my learning and education process and thus I can attest that reading and writing fan fiction have shaped me to the person who I am today.
