Psychology essay

Introduction

Brentano posits that Psychology concerns the understanding of behavior of human beings and the working of the brain. In order to obtain an appropriate diagnosis of a client, the psychologist is expected to follow steps that can help in consultation. The process begins with entry stage where the client explains himself or herself, followed by diagnosis stage, then implementation of plans made in the previous stage and lastly the disengagement stage. This last stage can show if the client received the remedy they ought to have received. These steps can aid in offering the client a proper solution to their problems. Out of what clients say; psychologists draw conclusions and offer recommendations on how to solve their issues. There are steps to follow to provide clients with the right remedy to their problems. It is crucial for any psychologist to follow these steps to make the right diagnosis and solve psychological issues facing their clients.

Many people consult in issues affecting their lives, in the past I have been consulted by two different clients seeking advice on their social life issues. I have been able to handle them professionally following all the required steps to handle such problems. The last client I serviced sought my help on personal matters on her social life and the consultation was informal. I followed the required stages to issue a proper diagnosis and solution the client.

When the client came to me, I first created a suitable environment for her to share her problem. I listened to her narrate her story as I noted down important points. Since it was an informal consultation, I needed not to enter into a formal agreement; I assured her though that she could trust me and that I will always be available to listen and offer her my advice. I asked her several questions as she answered back to understand her problem clearly.

When the consultation was over, I moved to the next step; the diagnosis stage. I tried to understand the problem at hand by going through what I had noted down earlier on. I was able to know what caused my clients problems; I also sought clarity on some areas that I could not grasp well. I tried to recall the solutions I gave to my clients with similar problems earlier on.  I used all these knowledge I have to understand exactly what causes my client pain. I made a plan on how I would begin the healing process for my client. I noted down four steps that I would use to help her overcome her problems.

The next step was to implement what I noted down in my plan. I broke down the four steps of my plan that I used four days to solve the issue. I first gave her some directions on what to do to stop the cause of the problem, I advised her to come back a few days later. When the results were positive I moved to the next step in my plan. At the end of the four plans, time had passed and my client was recovering from her pain and the problem was getting solved.

When my client was satisfied that she needed not the service anymore, I began the disengagement process. I evaluated the plan I used and found it effective. I released the client and planned for post consultations. The healing process for my client was slow but effective. I finally terminated the service when she fully recovered.

Conclusions

Psychologists need to maintain ethics and code of conduct throughout their consultation process. There are several ethical issues that need to be observed when offering psychological services, they include; confidentiality, competence, informed consent and how to deal with vulnerable people (Peters, 2015). In my consultation services, I try to uphold the best code of conduct and ethics. For formal consultations, I sign confidentiality forms and make sure that I keep my clients’ records in a safe place that cannot be accessed by external parties. I offer the best of services to my clients especially those I have enough expertise on. For instance relationships is my point of strength, I handle clients with relationship issues to the best of my ability.
