Narrative: Spot of Time by Cate Chopin

Introduction

In the novel; the story of an Hour, Cate Chopin captures the interior lives of the generation of women in the society. In her proto-feminist tale of the Story of an Hour, the author sheds light on the women by elucidating on the various frustrations which are undergone by this section of humanity.  This is a story about a woman who learns that her husband and life lover has died in a train crash, a situation that makes her go through a range of emotions. “The thoughts about how her husband loved her are so vivid and this makes her life miserable”, as explained by Chopin in the novel. As time goes by, the woman overcomes this sense of grief and regains a new energy and freedom which she yearned for.  Since then, she accepts her current situation and goes on with her life.  Through this, Chopin captures how an escape of marriage, even in the shortest time can grant a spouse, or rather the woman a relief. This essay will portray the significance of this story in my life.

The author tackles the real life of women and the position that they hold in the society.  “It fully elucidates on how most of them fall as victims of love and marriage after nature does the unexpected to them; snatching one side of the love mansion” (Chopin, 13). However, what is important is how we react towards natural happenstances like death as a way of regaining composure and going on with life. After Mrs. Mallard learns about the faked death of her husband, life turns meaningless to her. “Many people come to confront her and whisper sweet icings to as a way of making her block that loophole created by her befallen husband” (Chopin, 16). Ironically, Mrs. Mallard takes the shortest time to come to and realizes how life is sweet as a window. This creates a tragic irony in the woman after she finally realizes that her husband is still alive.

The Story of an Hour is meaningful to my life when I was undergoing some life disturbance. The story first enabled me to understand that marriage is a very complicated relationship that should be handled with a duty of care. After reading this story, I learned that as a young person I have to make proper calculations on how I should survive in the world of marriage and love. I learned the concept of independence as a woman as a means of survival in this turbulent world. Love is not permanent and thus I should always accept any changes that occur within the love circle, whilst trying the best to safeguard it.

After waiting for the right time to get married, I got the husband of my choice but I had to constantly review this story as a way of keeping our marriage lively and long-lasting. As a result of the same, it teaches me the importance of trust and real love even if my husband goes for a journey, thereby leaving me alone.  “Most women are craving for freedom in their marriages, not understanding the power that it holds” (Chopin, 45). This can only be solved by understanding the meaning of real love and that as a woman, I cannot escape most of the responsibilities that are bestowed upon me as a wife.

Conclusively, the novel has made it possible for me to control my own destiny. The Spot of time has made me understand that life is complex, and so do the relationships. Since it happens within a span of a short time, it has taught me that everything that we own as human beings can also be lost in one hour, thus leaving us in a state of solitude. I should not give up on anything as a woman without first giving it a fight. Also, I should not waste my life either, due to the desire of achieving the so-called freedom. This has made me survive immensely in my marriage. Despite the brevity of content, the story of the spot of time has acted as my life comfort.
