Introduction

The Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA) is a non-commissioned rank in the United States of America which is positioned in the office of the Army in the unites states of America. Whoever holds this rank is considered the most enlisted senior member of the army unless he/she is serving as the chairman of the Chief Joint of Staff as an advisor. In case he serves as an advisor to this board of staff, he will also be the most senior person of the SMA group. In the United States of America, the Sergeant Major of the Army is usually appointed to play the role of addressing all issues that are affecting soldiers in various offices. This includes the warranty officers, the lieutenants as well as addressing other issues that are affecting those who are holding the highest ranks in the army offices. Several people have served in the US as Sergeant Major of the Army but the current one is Daniel A. Dailey who has held the office since 2015. The purpose of this essay is to describe the history of the current Sergeant Major of the Army in the United States of America.

According to Simms, (121), the duties which the elected Sergeant Major of the Army in the US should perform are varying from time to time depending on with the prevailing political conditions of the country. However, in many are the times when the Sergeant Major of the Army in the United States of America spends most of his time travelling throughout the army in the US (Bushnell, 117). By doing all this, he undertakes training of the acting soldiers so as to enable them to increase their skills so as to serve the US army better (Bushnell, 119). Through this travelling, the Sergeant Major of the Army also talks to the soldiers and their families as a way of giving them moral support (Anglemyer, 60). Several people have served in the US as Sergeant Major of the Army but the current one is Daniel A. Dailey who has held the office since 2015.

The Sergeant Major of the Army has a long history in the United States of America. This position was based on those people who were in charge of marine, generally referred to as Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, a rank which was established and incarnated in May 1957 (Wallace, 18). It is during the same year when the Chief of Staff of the Army asked all the leaders of the major commands to come with a personal recommendation in the year, 1966 (Anglemyer, 72). According to him, however, this step was not a near-retirement type of assignment and therefore all the major commands were to be aware of all this (Bushnell, 118). This is the same time when the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps created the position of the Sergeant Major of the Army and listed all the duties which the holder of this position was supposed to perform (Bradshaw, 123).

According to Lisle (747), the first duties which the holder of the Sergeant Major of the Army would perform included acting as the personal adviser as well as an assistant on all the matters that pertained the enlisting of soldiers. The number of people who brought their names for consideration by the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps was 4,700 but out of this large number, only 21 people were nominated (Anglemyer, 75). Finally, the only person who was chosen was William O. Wooldridge who was serving in the Vietnam army. There have been different Sergeant Majors of the Army until the current date where Daniel A. Dailey is holding the office (Lisle, 752).

Daniel A. Dailey was born on January 1969 and was sworn in as the Daniel A. Dailey on January 2015. He was appointed while 46 years old and is still considered as the youngest soldier to serve in this position (Wallace, 25). Before being appointed as the Sergeant Major of the Army, Daniel A. Dailey was serving as the Command Sergeant Major for the Army Training and Doctrine Command in the United States of America. Born and raised in Palmerton in Pennsylvania, Sergeant Major for the Army Daniel A. Dailey entered the US army as Infantryman in the year 1989 (Bradshaw, 55). He attended basic training in Georgia at Fort Benning and proceeded to earn a bachelors degree in history from Excelsior College (Anglemyer, 84).

Daniel A. Dailey has a very outstanding military career due to the fact that he had undergone a lot of military education from various colleges in the US (Wallace, 31). His education towards military education includes a Basic Noncommissioned Officer’s Course and the Brandley Master Gunner Course (Bradshaw, 63). Other course which Daniel A. Dailey undertook in his military journey includes Advanced Noncommissioned Officer’s Course, the Force Management Course, First Sergeant Course and Keystone Course (Lisle, 755). Nevertheless, Dailey has served in the 1st, 2nd 3rd and the 4th divisions in the Infantry section of the US army.

During his leadership as a military army and officer in various places, Dailey has scooped various awards due to his outstanding performance in the roles in which he was entrusted with (Simms, 134). First, he is decorated with a Bronze Star Medal for his outstanding leadership in the siege that took place in Sadr City in Iraq (Bradshaw, 65). His achievement also made him get a selection as a command sergeant major in the 4th infantry division. It is also important to note that Dailey has also acted as the command sergeant major in the Doctrine and Training Command of the United States of America Army (Simms, 135). Other accomplishment for him includes awards such as the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Expert Rifle Badge and the Army Staff Identification badge, among other awards and decorations (Bradshaw, 131).

As a top enlisted soldier, Sergeant Major for the Army Dailey has shown many positive moves in his career as a young SMA. His has diverted his attention mostly to building the soldiers in the US army by making sure that they achieve a smart military education as well as attaining a robust training so that they can perform better. Sergeant Major for the Army Dailey is also focusing on the readiness and physical fitness of his soldiers because these two are some of the major tactics that can be used to combat an enemy. After soldiers retire from the military, Sergeant Major for the Army Dailey is very ken in helping them to transition smoothly from the military life to the civilian life so as to enable them to avoid some cases of post-traumatic disorders which is a serious problem facing retiring soldiers. Health is also an important requirement for every soldier. Sergeant Major for the Army Dailey makes sure that all soldiers in the US army are having thorough health check-ups at various points so as to promote their fitness. Sergeant Major for the Army Dailey has therefore played a very key role in promoting the defense and stability in the United States of America.
