Interpretation of a Cinematic View of the Life in Iran’s Islamic Republic

The film, a Separation, is a very successful one. It was the first film which won the Golden Bear Award in Iran, and it has a rating of 99 percent on the rotten tomatoes. The film resonates very well among its audiences because it touches several significant issues and themes that reflect on the life of Iran Islamic Republicans three decades after the 1979 revolution that they can easily relate to disregarding the different backgrounds where they come from.  It uses the Iranian culture to elaborately explore the topics in a way that is very unfamiliar to the people outside the county and goes ahead to give its audience a whole new way of looking at the situation. The film reflects a difficult marriage life where the Iranian government shows favors basing on someone’s sex. Women are supposed to accept the male-dominated ideas with a lot of submissions. People of a higher social class are favored in many ways and can quickly get away with wrongdoings. Additionally, the ideas driving the basic morality in Iranian Society is vital since it shows the ethics and characters of an individual. In one way or another at some point in time, one is forced honest and moral decisions for the greater good of the Iranian Society.

The film has a way of making women inferior to men since they cannot make significant family decisions as seen when Simin does not desire for her family to continue staying in Iran, but Nader insists that he has to stay behind because of his father.  It shows male dominance in the Iranian Society and how it is accepted widely. She is supposed to take care of her father in law as well as her children, a role that seems so well defined for women in this Society. She attempts to seek a divorce, and her reasons are not taken seriously by anyone outside the family.

She undergoes belittlement, and the divorce is granted upon her husband’s agreement, which results from him being irritated with her. Women in this Society tolerate the male-driven politics that is exercised by Iran’s together with the subservience that women are expected to agree to in this Society.

The film represents a class in a way that it revolves around conflicts that occurs between Razieh and Nader and the likelihood that he might have killed her baby who is unborn by accident. Nader becomes very mad at her for leaving his father unattended, and this makes him throw her out, disregarding the fact that she is pregnant. These occurrences of events would have been enough to make him pay for his mistakes, but the driving factor in this confrontation originates from the fact that Razieh is on a lower social ladder, unlike Nader who is in the upper middle class. This shows that in the Iranian Society, someone on a higher class cadre can do disrespecting things on the ones on the lower cadres and quickly get away with it, a common issue is present in many societies. This shapes the way people conduct their day-to-day activities and the general lives of people.

What I find surprising in this deception of the Iranian Society is when towards the end of the confrontation, interesting insights are given toward the morality of the characters of Hodjat and Razieh comparatively. Hodjat has viewed as the one with high morals regardless of his harsh demeanor all through the film. He harasses the family of Nader in the pursuit of justice. When they learn of the dishonest deals of Razieh, he leaves his arguments upon realizing that he has been wrong all through. He hits himself in frustration and dos not beat his wife, an astounding thing which is very contracted to the abusive husband suspected all through the film. Razieh is immoral who lies to gain reimbursement, though throughout the film, and she is the direct opposite. She makes Nader pay for something that is not his fault until her faith is brought to the Qur’an. This form of pretense in the Iranian Society is exciting since it portrays how the outward appearances can often mislead and at the same time show how humans will always try to justify the actions they do intend to convince themselves that they are the ones in the right.

The films help dispel many stereotypes including; men are harsh and abusive towards women as seen when throughout the film this has been a general perception but in the end, things town out differently as we see Razieh is immoral who lies intending to gain reimbursement though throughout the film she is the direct opposite. Also, it dispels the stereotype that the people of the high class are a less sensitive lot who bribes their ways to get the things that they desire without putting into considerations the people who they might hurt on their way up. This is evident in the case of Hodjat was portrayed as one who does unreasonable things and gets away with them because of his social position, but in the end, we find out that he is the morally upright one.

In conclusion, the film, a separation, is a great success vital for the Iranian Society. The complexities and subtexts make the film revolve very well among its audiences. It uses primary characteristics and confrontations to take about the Iranian Society and culture. Everyone in this Society can relate in the subjects of social class structure, marriage, basic human morality, which gives it a feeling of inclusivity.
