Reading Response 12: Using Anthropology outside the Academy
In the paper, the author states that there are several uses of anthropology within the school and outside the school. One use that I clearly grasp from his argument is that anthropologists can work to solve real-world problems by applying anthropological methods and ideas. I agree with this idea because outside the academy, and one can work with local communities to create solutions to challenges in various areas such as health, education, and environment. Another point that the author brings out is that we can use anthropology knowledge to work at the museums and national parks. An apart from the classroom experience, there are several applications of the concepts of anthropology in real-life situations.
I believe that anthropologists can help in state parks to interpret history. This will assists people in knowing where they are from and where they will be in the future. However, the paper clarifies the types of anthropology and their real-life and outdoor applications. First, it is noted that cultural anthropologists can help interpret the existence of certain cultures. They also help in creating cultural tolerance within communities of diverse backgrounds. Another branch that helps is linguistic anthropology, which deals with the study of languages and how they came to existence. Individuals who specialize in such cases can help in language interpretation in several locations. In a nutshell, the author states that there are several applications of anthropology when someone is outside the classrooms. Many people have got employment through the study of anthropology. I agree with the author’s presentation and how he organizes the points to help readers understand the application of anthropology outside the academy.
