Leadership establishing relationships and influencing change
Nursing as a profession depends on leaders of the practice to institute the necessary change which will steer the profession to the highest achievable levels of quality service. As a leader and an agent of change, there are several ways in which I can influence change in my nursing profession. First, I would model the change that I want to see. For a leader to bring about change, he/she must lead by example by doing things new ways so that others can emulate their example.
Second, I would demonstrate an understanding of the existing values in the nursing profession. In this way, I would lead my fellow professionals through the values they are already familiar with and merge them with new ideas. Moreover, as a leader I would institute change in the profession by involving more young people into appreciating nursing as a profession, getting people interested about nursing and telling lots of relevant stories to make people understand the profession in a better way. Two of my strengths that would promote strong leadership are being an effective communicator and being updated with the latest trends in the nursing profession. Effective communication would enable me express my ideas to my fellow profession in a way that they can understand and relate well with (Zanchetta et al., 201). Furthermore, being aware of the latest trends in nursing would enable me to steer my fellow professionals in the right direction in terms of embracing technology that potentially improves the services offered by nurses.
The two areas that I would need to improve are in time management and patience. As a leader I would have to manage my time better so as to ensure that I am able to carry out my duties both as a leader and as nursing practitioner. As a leader I will have to be deal with people from all backgrounds as such I would have to be patient enough with people in order to fully understand issues that affect them. The two strategies that I would implement as professional development tools for the leadership are innovation and improved communication (Satayeva et al., 2017). As a leader innovation is important since it enables leaders to do things in new ways hence bringing about positive change. Furthermore, improvement in communication would enable nursing professions be in touch with their leaders hence improving service delivery and the nursing profession in general. Being a leader calls for one to be an agent of change by being a good example of the change we want to implement.
