An interview with the Healthcare Environmental Service Manager (HESM) Mr. Glen
Abstract
Following a research conducted by the New York Times magazine in Stouffville Creek Retirement Residence which I spearheaded, I deduced that this particular facility is one of the successful health facilities in the United States. This prompted a scheduled interview with the Healthcare Environmental Services Manager (HESM) from this facility. I was particularly interested in interviewing the HESM because this facility not only succeeds in most of its operations but also attractive in nature. Question aligned to provide these answers were carefully selected with regards to patient’s profile, responsibilities of the HESM, the rationale for providing good services, average day and the challenges faced in this position. The interviewee provided adequate answers to these questions to accomplish a successful interview. The interview is divided into two parts; A and B.
Part A
The answer I get from Glen Parsons is that his customer’s profile at Stouffville Creek Retirement Residence composes of customers of age 70 plus. More than 80% of the customers are women who emanate from different cultures. Even though the customers are from different cultures, the majority are whites. However, most of our patients’ in this facility are in good mental conditions but when we come across abnormal cases, we do the referrals to facilities which specialize in mental care. Our facility has an emergency wing which means we admit even patients with physical injuries.
As a HESM, Glen says he is responsible for housekeeping laundry and maintenance activities. Besides, he is responsible for all environmental services operations in the clinic which only aims at achieving a friendly surrounding for all patients. Besides, he looks after ten employees The HESM asserts that a clinic is a very sensitive place for all human beings and especially the patients. In this clinic, we are very friendly and caring to our customers. I look after all their needs both big and small needs. Mr. Glen normally reports working daily at 7.30 am. His day is normally compacted with many activities which call for his late retirement from work at 3.30 pm. So on an average, he spends close to nine hours a day. The main challenge Mr. Gen faces as a HESM is a cumbersome work. He builds rounds and checks emails. Moreover, this morning stand-ups and meeting the organization staff for the daily jobs are hectic. He prioritizes his jobs for the day and things happen very fast which makes adaptation difficult.
Part B
I must say the meeting with the HESM provided a basis for understanding the Stouffville Creek Retirement Residence overview and customers’ profile. The interview was a short interview from Stouffville Creek Retirement Residence from where Glen Parsons resides. The facility has a HESM who clearly understands his role as a HESM. From the research I conducted, the clinic was outstanding in terms of its environmental attraction, the wards clean and an organized team to ensure quality work is achieved for the patients. All these are attributed to the responsible HESM as seen in this interview. Based on the customer’s profile for this residence, the facility is found to be admitting patients mostly women over 70 years of age at more than 80% compared to men. This implies that children and men as deduced from the interview are lowly admitted to the facility. The facility, however, deals with acute mental illness as deduced from Mr. Glen. The customers to Stouffville are mostly whites though without any racial discrimination. The clinic must, therefore, be an attractive facility because it does not discriminate when it comes to the patients’ profile.
