Problematic political coordination lack of understanding knowledge of the disaster recovery

Introduction

When you hear about the Hurricane Katrina, the first question that comes to our mind is what is meant by it. It is therefore essential to begin by looking at the definition of Hurricane Katrina; it is a tropical cyclone. It has become one of the national disasters in the United States. This hurricane struck the southern parts of the United States in late August of the year 2005 (Britannica, 2005). Lives of more than 1800 people were claimed as a result of this cyclone and displaced about one million people. Flooding caused the levees of New Orleans city to submerge. The population of the town was initially about 500000.  About100000 of this population were trapped in the city thereby staying without food, power and drinking water, however, the efforts of rescuing these multitudes delayed; many people were stranded for many days on collapsed as well as in attics shortly before the arrival of the rescue team. (Sanxton, 2012). The city was rendered a toxic pool of sewage, corpses as well as chemicals. The city of New Orleans was affected by the storm because it lied on the part of that scrupulous storm. I remember this incidence pretty as if it were yesterday; the city was deserted in the event of this storm. The people who were weak and unable to move were left behind and therefore got hit by the storm. Anybody never imagined that the effects caused by Hurricane Katrina are such devastating. However, if nobody had been left behind, then the consequences would not have been such ridiculous. Various possible ways would have been used to rescue those people before the storm hit. Majority of the victims got drown as a result of flooding due to the failure of levees. It was very disappointing to watch over TV the people who were pleading for their lives and their loved ones. After this significant catastrophe, various websites were developed to enlighten people on the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina. The effects of hurricane vary in nature and majority of the people fail to recognize it. For several years that have passed, United States systems of warning against hurricanes provided sufficient period for individuals living in highlands as well as immediate coastline to relocate when the threats of storms are perceived. Conversely, it was difficult for them to be evacuated from these environments because of fast population growth. Another reason is that a more significant percentage of this population living in areas that are prone to hurricanes have not witnessed any primary hurricane. Majority of these individuals are conversant with weaker storms thereby believing that significant hurricanes are rare.

Problematic political coordination

Political controversies together with electoral consequences have raised several political disputes. One of the significant predominant conflicts is the lack of understanding and knowledge of the disaster recovery. There is need to understand the way people in the coastal area detect the threat of the hurricane. These would enable them to come up with actions of addressing the problem. Frequently, a gap exists amid the reality of the storm’s method and the way individuals define this method. In the meantime, the political class debate on the effects on the frequency of climate change and the intensity of the hurricane. Research done on objective strategies such as speed of the wind, storm-surge as well as the economic damage has shown that storms have become stronger in the recent days as opposed to how they were in the past (Emery, 2016). Since 1980, eight of the ten most economically damaging hurricanes have taken place from 2004. In the political arena, various issues related to hurricanes in multiple dimensions such as the following:

  • To find out if the flood protection measures designed by US army corps were inappropriate. This issue is challenging. The objectives of the design provided to the crew by officials of the state did not make a request for protection against flood for the next 100 years.
  • To find out if the loss of coastal wetlands resulted in amplified flooding more inland.
  • To find out if the state lacks environmental system has improved the contamination of flood waters.
  • To find out if reforms in the design of US army corps are required as well as construction policies.
  • To find out if the Congress needs improvements for the manner in which they carry out projects for flood protection (Voanews, 2009)
  • To find out if legislation should be changed for the poor to recover quickly from a disaster.
  • If large migrations will propel changes in electoral districts of displaced persons

Coordination levels

Coordination is the process of managing dependencies amid entities. This coordination occurs at different levels of management of the crisis. Most people argue that there is a need for coordination resulting from constraints impost on the performance of tasks based on the nature of these tasks. Hurricane Katrina became the deadliest hurricane in the United States and brought about various effects discussed below:

New Orleans submerged

The greatest part of the city flooded to different levels up to 20 feet. The major tourist attraction centers and the businesses sustained fewer damages whereas other neighboring sections were inundated (Horan, 2017). This phenomenon rendered Katrina the largest disaster in the history of the United States.

Lasting flood damage

The city of New Orleans flooded for 43 days later after the landfall of Katrina. The army corps engineers from the reports said that flood water had not been removed from the city.

Tornado catalyst

The hurricane Katrina spawned 43 tornados in total in different locations. Georgia City recorded a high number of tornados followed by Alabama and Mississippi.

Conclusion

Due to destructive and disastrous nature of Katrina, it is more recommendable and advisable to keep off as soon as it is detected. Political coordination should be made effective through disseminating required knowledge on disasters including hurricanes. The United States government should purpose on relocating the populations which live on coastlines as well as islands as soon as hurricanes are predicted. Various applicable methodologies should be applied where possible to ensure the safety of the citizens. The aged are the ones majorly affected since they cannot move fast and therefore, they should be considered first in the event of hurricanes. The government ought to fund the methods of the methods used to militate against disasters. However, these methods should be cost-effective. All government agencies and the US army corps Engineers should comply with the measures that are put in place.
