Global City Identifiers
A city could be too extreme: either of tremendous or no importance to a country. (pg 71) Abraham (2014). in his books suggest that a city may lie in any of the two extremes. It could be an essential place for a country in terms of political, social, and economic purposes.
Similarly, a city could be of less significance to a nation. As such, one gets to wonder. The exact parameters used to identify a city. What elements should cities possess? As Abraham notes in his book, the aspects of a city must be inclusive. They must fit a specified criterion based on findings from a researcher named Friedman. This paper focuses on the identities marking most cities around the globe.
A city is marked by the type of activities being carried out. These activities depict the kind of status the city is in. For instance, a city could develop due to oil mining. In the days to come, the city shall be known as the oil city. Therefore, the activities getting carried out determine the city.
Moreover, the population is also a significant determinant. However, though, some cities with less population are termed more significant cities compared to some of which have high people. This is because demographics alone cannot qualify for a city. It has to be accompanied by activities that t promote social, economic, and political importance. Similarly, a city is classified by the number of international bodies with their headquarters in the city. A higher number suggests tranquility in terms of politics, social living, and economics.
Overly, there are a significant number of elements to be fulfilled by a city. For once, it has to have activities tied to it. These activities should promote economic, political, and social wellbeing. More so, it has to have some international body headquarters situated there. This shows the city is in a state of tranquility.
