Annotated Bibliography on Need for woman- centered treatment for substance use disorders
Thesis statement: States throughout the country should provide more funding to open new drug treatment facilities because individuals recovering from addiction will contribute to the reduction in crimes, become gainfully employed citizens, and improve the quality of life in their communities.

In 2016 in the United States many young adults were unable to get specialty treatment for their substance abuse problem. On average one out of ten adults were able to receive proper care. A study of publicly funded treatment done in Canada revealed that pregnant woman and other at-risk population had to wait long lengths of time before they were able to get treatment Elms et al. (2018).
The Harm Reduction Journal is a peer reviewed online only medical journal. They have been publishing article since 2004. More recently they began to focus on evidenced based practices like Harm Reduction. This EBP does not promote abstinence instead it respects the rights of the individual who use drugs by finding a safer way to use drugs. This article aligns with my argument, it depicts why more funding is needed for substance treatment facilities. I found this source to be credible because it was retrieved from PG library. It is also credible because others in the medical and the field of addiction contribute to it and it is reviewed by peers for validity.

The need for mental health and drug treatment is necessary. Many republican governors around the country have instituted programs to increase quality of life. According to (Knopf, 2017) they feel that treatment will be instrumental in reducing crime, and release police to fight more violent crime.
Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly is the commanding subscription publication covering breaking medical, business and political news in the substance abuse treatment and prevention field. The author Alison Knopf has written many articles which focuses on addiction and the diverse ways to provide treatment. This article discusses how law enforcement resources are diverted to fight minor crimes instead of focusing on the major crimes. This author is an expert in the field of addiction and the article reinforces my argument. This is a credible source that was researched in PG library.
Lopez, G. (2017). Trump’s budget makes it official: He’s doing little to nothing about the opioid epidemic. Retrieved from https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/5/23/15680096/trump-budget-opioid-epidemic.
There is nothing in the budget to balance out the cuts for drug treatment, leaving a crater in the government’s response to the opioid crisis. More than 33,000 opioid overdose deaths and more than 52,000 total drug overdose deaths were recorded in 2015. Cuts to the office in charge of coordinating drug policy, Medicaid and public health programs showed little significance regarding the epidemic. According to (Lopez, 2017) tens of thousands of people will likely die of drug overdoses under the current administration if the opioid crisis does not become top priority.
The writer German Lopez is a senior correspondent for Vox. He has written many articles that focused on criminal justice, drugs and guns. Before signing on with Vox, an American news and opinion website, he worked as a writer for a Cincinnati newspaper. I would consider this source to be credible, however the article does not support my argument that the need for more substance abuse treatment is necessary. The budget cuts that the articles mentioned will only make the opioid epidemic harder to contain. In addition, Vox media has become well known and respected for its views on politics and other sensitive topics.

One out of 10 addicted individuals that need treatment never get it. The negative stigmas that are placed on addicts have done more harm than good. Our views as a society are inaccurate, instead of focusing on the drug use we should focus on what makes people use drugs. The “war on drugs” is being fought incorrectly instead of more prison sentences we need treatment. The short of treatment facilities in some areas only makes things worse. Ed Stevenson’s TED Talk “Seeing Drugs and Alcohol Addiction in a New Light” (2016) helps to reinforce his previous statement by saying we invest more money in hiring corrections officers instead of drug counselors.
The Ted Talk series is a very informative and reliable source. Experts and professional from a variety of fields discuss relevant topics affecting today’s society. The speaker Ed Stevenson is the founder of Life Recovery Solutions, a behavior modification software company, he has also been personally impacted by addiction through the death of his brother and nephew. I chose this source because more than all the others he stresses the need and the importance of getting more treatment for those that suffer from addiction.
