Language paper

Living things have a certain way of communicating with each other by the use of sounds and signs to express actions, feelings, need to pass a message and actions. Among living things, human beings have the most developed language system since the human mind is highly developed. Human beings cannot be expected to have lived at any time before language existed and thus the history of human language can be dated back to the existence of humankind. Language is the tool for communication that allows human beings to facilitate the flow of knowledge and ideas from individual to individual. The misunderstanding between human beings can be eliminated by using language as an instrument to transfer knowledge between people. The definition of language as a means of information transfer varies between different groups of people, and the efficiency of communication depends on the extent to which an individual goes to add individual efforts to ensure the dissemination of intended information.

Language is what a group of individuals agree to use in the day-to-day communication and passing of information.  According to Verreyt, (2016), the agreement to use a language involves a clear definition of the standards to govern the language use, the defining ethical standards of the language in question and the extent to which the language will be termed as a sub-language of the original language.  In reality, an initially same language differs with the separation of people in terms of distance and regions with greater regional differences causing a severe gap in the way a language is spoken. The long term effect of geographical separateness is the emergence of new languages which are similar but not the same as the mother language.

The main strategy used by language is the ability to create attention and pass information when someone’s focus has been drawn towards the goal of the conversation happening. The use of language has been associated with the ability to create a perspective and more generally to affect the way a communication target thinks. “The power of language and words to change the way of thinking and perception has been proved … and then when one is asked to recall some words, the words tent to change the way the individuals are thinking…,” (Tannen). The effectiveness of using a particular language depends on the ability to create perception from the words spoken with the goal of creating meaning.

Language is explicitly metaphorical. The use of language in day-to-day life has been associated with the employment of metaphors to insist on the understanding of ideas. The purpose of metaphor can be attributed to the fact that comparison is an effective and easier way of compelling an individual into creating a perspective from a related situation that is not necessarily the same as the situation in practice. In the article, Fighting for our Lives, Tannen highlights the significant role played by metaphors in the day to day communication: “All language uses metaphors to express ideas; some metaphoric words are novels, made up for an occasion but become more calcified into the language…,” (p.13). The absolute reliance of metaphors by a language to pass the desired message has made man a slave to own language because the perception and decision depend entirely on the language used to give certain information.

Language is the primary definition and identification of a group of people, with the greater part of groupings of people being primarily based on the spoken language. Newell et al, (2017) state that, people with similar language tend to share similar ideas and similar beliefs thus always stay close to each other. The development of any language is attributed to a group of people being able to draw perception from the language used within the group. The meaning portrayed by different figures of speech in a particular group may not be understood initially, but if a member can independently bring the sense of information concerning a certain communication passed, then the individual is a qualified member of the said group. People leaving close to each other tend to face similar challenges, and the ability to solve the challenges faced depends on the ability to have a common language through which ideas can be passed from one individual to another. Language use begins with the desire to solve an existing problem that forces an individual or a group of individuals into devising ways of passing information. The methods that a group of people devises to pass information grow to become a language and spreads to become an identity for the group that comes up with the invention.

In sum, language is the tool that allows a group of human beings to enjoy a smooth flow of knowledge and ideas from individual to individual. The misunderstanding between human beings can be eliminated by using language as an instrument to transfer knowledge between people. The definition of language varies between different groups of people, and the efficiency of communication depends on the extent to which an individual goes to add individual efforts to ensure the dissemination of intended information.
