Differences between Rock Concert from Modern Times and Baroque Music

There are three main musical periods, which include the romantic era, the classical era, and the impressionist era. The first era was the classical era, which occurred in the mid and late 18th century. The second era was the romantic era, which occurred in the 19th century. The impressionist era was the third era and occurred in the 20th century.

Amongst the three eras, there have been two popular cadres of music, which include the baroque music and modern classical music. There are some differences between these two categories of music. Baroque music was primarily based on aesthetic rules, voice rules, and there were limitations as to what instruments could be used. Modern classical music, on the other hand, has divergent musical elements and involves the use of different instruments. The harmonies in the Baroque music are also similar and are devoid of any atonalism. The rhythmic flows are also not included in the Baroque music, but they are existent in modern classical music.

For this study, I chose two contrasting excerpts of music, which are divergent, even in the contrasts. In the first excerpts, I selected a rock concert known as ‘A Perfect Circle,’ which I was fond of. The concert is the typical rock concert that is characterized by scenic high rock mood, interchanging lights, dark background, and a shouting crowd.  I enjoyed the concert primarily because the artists were talented, as evidenced by their songs. Also, they were animated and found different ways of entertaining the crowd.

The second excerpt that I selected was from the Baroque cadre of music. I chose Vivaldi’s concert known as Concerto in A Minor for Two Violins. The concert showcased two violinists playing a song, and they were backed up by two orchestras. The concert occurred in a church with beautiful paintings and ceilings that depicted a gothic style.

I enjoyed both concerts because I found out that they were appealing in nature. It is, however, palpable that there are striking differences between both concerts. The group at the rock concert was artistic and involved a lead singer whose voice was unique.

Even though the concerts are very lively and entertaining, I would not enjoy being at the live concert even though I enjoyed the excerpts from the concert. The primary reason why I would not enjoy a live concert is that I find the environments where these concerts are performed are frantic and uncontrolled. I am reserved in nature, and I would, therefore, find such concerts uncomfortable.

The fact that there is a disconnect between how I enjoy live concerts and the concert excerpts is one of the primary reasons why I am appreciative of the new technologies. New technologies are critical since they enable us to enjoy concerts in the comfort of our homes or places of work. The above is made possible through online download software such as YouTube and live streaming capabilities through mobile phones, computers, and tablets. The advent of these technologies enables us to enjoy music concerts, even without attending the environments where these concerts are performed.

Technology has had a profound effect on modern music. Technology has an impact on the type of music created by artists. Also, it has an impact on how the audience consumes music as well as how the instruments are played. Technology has a significant impact on how music is created, for instance, through the development of effect pedals that have introduced different effects for different music genres. Technology also has an impact on how music is consumed, for instance, through the introduction of music libraries. The development of online music libraries such as iTunes has enabled musicians to disseminate their content to any corner of the world. In the past, musicians relied heavily on record and album purchases to distribute their content to the public and to make sales. The conventional method, however, was not safe and convenient. As mentioned herein, the development of music streaming sites has also made it possible for the audience to consume music without attending concerts physically.  Many people around the world love music, but not all of them have the capability or willingness to attend a concert. The fact that music content could only be sold to those who attended concerts in the past reveals that there was a significant group that was left out of their sales. In the Baroque era, for instance, only a small group of people and especially those with a good income, could attend concerts. Many youths were employed at the time, and only the older persons with substantial income could attend. Modern technologies have enabled all and sundry to enjoy music regardless of where they are, while at the same time maximizing the profits for music producers.  Also, it has enabled people from all social backgrounds and ages to access music easily and affordably.

In conclusion, it is evident from the study that there are differences between Baroque music and music from the modern era. The baroque music was conventional and was selective in terms of the instruments used. The modern music is, however, adaptive and also incorporates the use of diverse instruments.
