research method and technique of data collection

A dissertation or research project is one of the requirements to get a doctoral degree. For this assignment. I will review Glyde (2019) dissertation entitled: Developing a Framework to Improve Ethical Decision-Making Financial Institutions. The author of the paper used a specific research approach to conduct his research work. Thus, in this paper, I would present the research method and technique of data collection. On the other hand, I will argue about the justification of these tools.

Research question and proposal research method

Glyde (2019) chosen: What are the life experiences of U.S. financial institution employees that could assist organizational development and equip managers with improved ethical decision making in finical institutions?  Based on the research question, the author used a web conference supported semi-structure guided by open-ended questions to reveal new experiments and themes. Thus, the author presented three research approaches: quantitively, qualitative, and mixed methods. The author found the quantitate and mixed-method unfavorable due to the form of data collection. For example, data collected using open-ended questions, while the quantitive method formulated the questions as closed-end questions (Bryman & Bell, 2011).

On the other side, the author had chosen the qualitative research approach, because of this method allowed to leverage social context, and multiple occurrences and perceptive to improve the understanding of the subject area using both an exploratory and indicative process ( Bryman & Bell, 2011).

The author provides evidence on why the qualitative research approach was appropriate for this study. Qualitative methods included open-ended questions such as observations and interviews. Gaylde’s (2019)’s dissertation used a phenomenological qualitative approach. This approach was designed to focus on developing a better understanding of the nature of an experience or an occurrence and descriptive and interpretive methods. Furthermore, this approach is supporting the author to bring up a new conception and relationship with the current theories. From my point of view, a phenomenological approach could help the research to reveal things out by observing employee’s behavior involved in the study.

Data collected and citing scholars

The author of this paper used a reliable approach to select participants in this study. The sample size is suitable for qualitative phenomenological studies. Ten people with a minimum of three years of experience in the field. Open-ended questions were used to encourage participants to provide details of their life experiences. To improve data collection, I may choose a larger institution, and I would select people from different departments to get different opinions. On the other side, the author used scholars well and cited all sources of information gathered. At this point, I would use more varieties of scholars to bring out more evidence to support my research.

Conclusion

In the end, I will recap what I presented in this paper. One of the primary requirements to get a doctoral degree is conducting a dissertation or research project. I have chosen a recent thesis at Colorado Technical University that used a qualitative research approach. The research question was undertaken to get an understanding of how employees could make an ethical decision in a finical institution. The author used a phenological method to interpret the participant’s response to an open-ended question. Lastly, the author used references very well and could be improved if he used a variety of references to expand the evidence.
