Impact of whistle blowing on health care organizations

Exposing information that is deemed unethical, illegal or not correct within an organization is referred to as whistleblowing. According to Mannion et al (2018), Staff always feel unable to speak or when they do, the organizations from which they speak act inappropriately. Whistleblowing impacts Health Care organizations both negatively and positively. In this paper, I will highlight some positive and negative impacts of Whistleblowing.

Body

Blowing the whistle is a quality maintainance measure.  Maria, Silvia and Rocco, (2016) extensively highlight how whistle blowing has improved the quality of health care organizations. They explain how employees may prefer external channels to report malpractices in an organization. An organization will handle their activities cautiously  if they are aware of the possibility of whistleblowing. Fleming et al, (2018) conducted  a paper-based survey of delegates attending the Association of Surgeons in Training conference and found out that when employees in the health sector become silent witnesses, then there follows poor quality performance. Similar points are raised by Jones A, Craven R (2016) who express the importance of nurses to report cases of poor care in their practice. How else would a profit making institution maintain quality if there were no overseers? Even where the government has laid down procedures to maintain the same, regulatory bodies will work efficiently only if there are people willing to blow the whistle from the inside.

On the other side, whistleblowing may be abused by disloyal individuals. According to Caillier, (2013) whistleblowers are viewed as employers who are only getting back of the organization rather than individuals who are commited to the success of the organization. This fact may be taken advantage of by individuals who are planning to benefit from the failure of the company. Many organization leaderships react in rather inappropriate way and when the relationship between employers and employees is ruined, the performance of the organization is largely affected.

Conclusion

It is essential for an organization to view whistleblowing positively and seek on the ways to benefit from the points raised by the blowers before they act against their course. Depending on the percpective of the organization, it will have a positive or negative impact to the Health Care Organization. The benefits of whistleblowing are however more than the demerits according to this paper.
