MY THEORY OF COUNSELLING

It is what you do in a relationship, not what others choose that is reality therapy (William Glasser). These words hung on the main door to our clinic, and whenever I see them, a deep sense of the reality therapy revolves around my mind. A group of linked ideas aimed at explaining something and dos provide a framework for the explanations is what is referred to as a theory. Reality therapy relates to the method of counselling and psychotherapy developed by William Glasser and enables human beings to examine their wants and needs. They too evaluate their manners wholeheartedly while making plans for satisfying and accomplishing their needs as well as those of others around them.

William Glasser developed reality theory in the year 1965 when he published one of his many books and fro this one specifically he assigned it, the title Reality therapy. William Glasser was born in the year 1925, and he attended Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio). Among his massive collection of books is Reality Therapy, which he wrote in the year 1965. The main aim of reality therapy revolves around creating solutions to problems, solving them, rebuilding relationships while establishing ties that would work well for our future (Neri,2007).  It is the work of the person administering the therapy to figure out all that they want for the patient as well as monitoring their current behaviours as it relates to their goals.

At the Veterans Administration hospital in Los Angeles in the early 1960s, William Glasser with both his Teacher and mentor as well as psychiatrist  G .L Harrington (Wikipedia). The term reality therapy refers to a process which is both people-friendly and people-centred and has got v nothing to do with giving people a dose of reality (as a threat or punishment), but rather helps people to recognize how fantasy can distract them from the choices they control in life. This theory posits that we should not dwell on the past but rather to resolve and move so that we may lead a more fulfilling and rewarding life. Later an extended theory referred to as the “Control Theory”, was brought up (Prout, H.T, & Fedewa, A.L. (2015).). Our sense as self-determining beings is what asserts the choice theory. This affects both our behavioural and responsible character. In precise, it is more concerned with our attitude and goes a long way to explaining how we understand the world around us.

In my work and life, I would use this theory to control both my behaviours as well as establish a responsible path geared towards seeing me succeed. As a matter, I would build more on my relationships as well as develop a long-lasting friendship with anyone around me as long as it sees me succeed and turn into whatever I enjoy most .’ Many people, however, do not understand the precise meaning of relationships and do wait for the other parties to work them out. Even my clients do understand very well, the essence of having friends for life and establishing long term grounds.

The major theorists of the reality theory in this paper are William Glasser and psychiatrist  G .L Harrington. Both worked at Veterans Administration hospital in Los Angeles, and the later was the mentor (Prout, H.T, & Fedewa, A.L. (2015).The key pillars of this reality theory are a reality, responses as well as right and wrong .  Reality therapy has got both weaknesses and strengths just like any other theory. The greatest one is that it is appealing to clients who are more resistant to treatment (Neri,2007). An excellent example of such a category being those who are court-ordered.  Its greatest weakness, on the other hand, however, is that it may not be successful with clients who have more complex problems, like severe mental illnesses or childhood trauma.

 

MY JOURNEY TO SELF INSIGHT AND PERSONAL GROWTH

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. This is an African proverb that I can attest has got exactly the same meaning and reflects the path taken by my life altogether. If I were to describe my life path to self-insight,self-development and personal growth, I would then have to use this proverb. Most of my clients have always been shocked whenever I reveal to them how life used to be for me during the young days.

Back then, when I was in my early 20s, and when I was still new in the industry, I counted myself successful and indeed saw that  I had already achieved a lot. Not started today, but several years ago, my journey to success has taken a long path. I have walked a journey full of trials as well as challenges to see myself become the man that I am. Many are the times that I have found myself appreciating the number therapy principles that I have applied and which have seen me become the person that at last, I have grown to be. When I look back to the many days ago when I had little or no realization at all of the type of life that I wanted to lead all the time, some challenging moments lead us to make the best decisions of our lifetime. This is to say that they make the best that we can as well as obtain great success. In this paper, I shall discuss my entire process to self-realization as well as personal growth. That is how my life has been as well as what  I have done all to see me a changed and well-transformed man.

When you ask people what self-realization is, some respond to you with total anger while others would just look down upon you. However, it is worth noting that not all people are the same and that some may even neglect you over what you are not well aware of. However, many years ago, I used to sit down in the office and call myself a successful individual back then Since  I had a car, a family and some little investments. All this made me feel like an already successful man who need not work anymore. For what? Why should I? Who am I? Life went on smoothly till I realized that there was much more and that I was not yet worth saying that   I had already won anything. The many weekend parties and the endless list of activities are all I wanted to have. Among my peers, I was given quite an excellent rating of success, and in reality, this gave me some confidence that I had already achieved. For me, I really did not care for as long as I was praised and won the approval from most of my friends. Many years later I can recall and just say that a considerable regret haunts me. This is to reply as soon as I realized that it is imperative to do some personal rating that’s when my life got back to normal, I miss and will forever miss the many peaceful moments have enjoyed since realizing myself.

Looking at my current position status, as well as friends and I do realize how I lost most of them, some have never checked back on me. Awkwardly I have also never tested on them, and This clearly explains the entire life of self-realization and how people run away from you whenever your interest and theirs do not match. I have tutored and mentored many people in the past and as well seen the success of many more. And my testimony to them is always apparent based on the message of reality and even working towards achieving their own goals.
