The intent for The Statue of Liberty

Upon going through these two articles about the Statue of Liberty, I did realize that its purpose changed over time.  This is because the primary intention of the artist was to place it near the Suez Canal, then it changed to New York to be used to symbolize the spread of liberty across the globe. Since I had never studied the statue in-depth, through the articles, I learned more details that I didn’t know before. Such as this Statue of Liberty is a representation of an Egyptian Muslim lady. As a result, my perception of the statue changed. So, I currently know this statue was a symbol of immigration. I always presumed that the poem authored by Emma Lazarus was printed on the tablet that the liberty lady clutches tightly. Indeed, this read was great, and it widened my knowledge of the real significance of the statue.

The artifact of choice is Mona Lisa. A query I can ask concerning it could be what intentions of the artist who made mona Lisa were is? What was Mona Lisa going to represent? An approach I could execute to answer this question is to ask my self silently on what was the artist’s intentions and what Mona Lisa was portraying. After that I will also do some research on the artifact so that I can verify the answers to the question.

The conception of the statue of liberty emerged during a French dinner party. A liberal and legal scholar Edouard Rene de Laboulaye, who was a leading France expert in the US  and preferred most the American style of governance and politics to that of his country France which was then under Napoleon II rule was among those present at the dinner. The purpose of the dinner party was to celebrate the Union’s victory against the American Civil War confederacy. The guests and Laboulaye intended to show the union’s support as well as make a gesture premeditated to state the dominance of the American political system over the authoritarian France system.

The intent of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s towards the conception of the Statue of Liberty was to depict a combined effort between the US and France. As a result, it was mainly intended to commemorate the long-lasting friendship amidst the citizens of these two countries. Likewise, it was to represent the superiority and American liberty of the American state.  However, over time the representation of the Statue of Liberty now portrays diverse aspects since it’s conception and assembly in the US. For instance, for most immigrants travelling to New York through Boats. This statue depicts opportunity and safety in a new life in the modern world and America.
