Democracy

Democracy is the most common and popular form of government in the world. The perception of most people is that democracy offers the best type of government as people choose their leaders and are ruled according to the way they need. Also, people have been taking democracy as a superior form of government when compared to a dictatorship government. However, the situation around democracy does not reflect the real picture that most people imagine. Democracies have been failing worldwide, and no form of government can be said with certainty that it is the best because one form of government will succeed in one country, while it fails massively in another country. A democratic government is one that gets power from the citizens, although it is not superior to the dictatorship form of government, and has been challenging to develop and maintain in several countries due to the complications in the choice of leaders.

A democratic government is a government involving the use of power given to the citizens to lead a country. Although different definitions exist for democracy, the government generally means a system where the rule of the majority prevails (Munck, 2016). In a democratic setting, an assumption is made that the majority opinion is always right. Furthermore, democratic governments are formed by letting the citizens elect, through a popular vote, the leaders that they need to rule on their behalf. Besides, the opinions of every person in a democratic setting cannot be considered. Therefore, a representative is chosen by the citizens, and another assumption is made that the selected representative bears the opinion held by the citizens they represent. Although restrictions are made in the constitutions concerning the eligible people, the citizens hold the absolute power to elect people of their choice as long as they meet the criteria set in the various statues. However, democracy has been wrongly perceived as being superior to dictatorship.

A dictatorship is a form of a government where an individual does leadership with absolute authority towards the country they rule. Generally, leadership in a dictatorship government is obtained by force, and the ruler makes decisions without considering the opinions of their subjects (Fukuyama, 2015). However, some dictatorships develop from other forms of government, such as the democracies, after rulers decide to go against the constitution. Democracy has, yet, been wrongly viewed as being superior to dictatorship. Generally, democracy and dictatorship are independent systems of government that develop from individualistic circumstances. Also, deciding that democracy is better than dictatorship may be biased in that the success of democracy is a matter of chances, just like dictatorships. Generally, dictatorship succeeds in some countries, while it fails in others, so it is a democracy. Therefore, democracy cannot be said to be superior to dictatorship, and the success of any form of government happens differently in different countries. Moreover, developing and maintaining democracy has been a significant challenge historically, with the world struggling to uphold the system amid resistance from people who value other forms of government.

Maintaining democracy involves having to deal with the leaders chosen by people with different ideologies. Generally, democracy is based on a controversy in that the minority are chosen to represent the majority, although the government claims to be based on the interests of the majority (Li, Alon & Wu, 2017). Besides, the elected minority promotes their agendas, and the views of the majority are taken for granted. The fact that most nations have set clauses in their laws to impeach misbehaving leaders shows that their trust in democracy is weak. The advocates of democracy have been having challenges trying to convince the citizens that democracy should be upheld. Generally, maintaining democracy involves taking the risk of trusting people with making opinions for the majority. Moreover, the success of other forms of government, such as dictatorships, has suffered democracy a major blow.

The challenges in economic and international relations have been heavy for democracies. Other forms of government, such as dictatorship, have appeared to overcome such challenges, while democracies struggle in dealing with policies (Knutsen, 2016). For example, the negative impacts of corruption have continued to destroy economies in democratic governments without much to be done. The government depends on the power of the citizens to take action on culprits, and the situation has not been easy. For example, citizens will generally trust the person they elected and will be resistant to any attempts to have them executed for corruption allegations. Furthermore, democracy is based on how an individual can effectively convince the electorate and not how effective as a leader, the individual can serve. Moreover, the election process in democratic governments is faced with several setbacks that further reduce the trust given to democratic governments.

Democracy is formed through an election process that allows the citizens to choose their leaders into the government. However, the emergence of anti-social movements plays a crucial role in destroying the reputation given towards democracy (Dodsworth & Cheeseman, 2018). Vices such as voter bribery and rigging of elections have been rampant in the election processes. Also, the use of propaganda to lure voters into making certain decisions has been behind the election of ineffective leaders. Democracy has continued to suffer the impact of anti-social organizations as citizens have been making uninformed decisions. The results from elections have always been changed to fit the interests of particular individuals hence causing democracy to lose its intended objective. Besides, the anti-social organizations have been using their financial power and popularity to convince voters to make poor decisions. Generally, democracy has been changed to become an avenue for bringing personal opinions into power, and trust has been growing low among people, hence a challenge to the whole idea of democracy. Moreover, the economy for most countries has been a major drawback in the efforts to develop democracy.

The world has been going through difficult economic times in recent years. Governments have been struggling to stay on course by making policies that give priority to the electorates. Besides, the primary goal of a democratic government is to develop the ideologies of the citizens by following the opinions brought out by their representatives (Luna & Vergara, 2016). However, economic factors have been forcing democratic governments to overlook the opinions of the citizens in making policies. For example, powerful organizations have forced democratic governments into getting into agreements aimed and securing the economic safety of the governments, thus ignoring the opinions given by the citizens. Most of the organizations have gone to the extent of presenting candidates for elections and using their financial might to convince the voters into electing such candidates. Where the voters have not been convinced, voter bribery takes its course, and the organizations end up having representatives in the government. Therefore, democracy allows for the compromise of freedom,s while selecting leaders. Also, the trust among the citizens towards the democratic government fades when the legitimacy of the election processes is compromised. Moreover, democracy has continued to face the challenge of voter indifference; hence, results are based on a false representation of the entire population.

Democracy has been associated with several shortcomings that have contributed immensely towards harming the fate of numbers. The choice of leaders based on tyrannies has worked to the disadvantage of minority groups who form a large group when counted as a group of minorities. Furthermore, the election of candidates depends on factors such as caste and religion. The winning candidates end up representing the castes and religions from which they belong (Luna & Vergara, 2016). Therefore, the system is founded on discrimination based on religion and caste. Such discriminations have had a significant impact on the perspectives held by the people towards the election. Eventually, most people have lost interest in politics and elections, and the number of voters has continued to go down. Democracy can only survive where people are willing to come out and elect their leaders.

In sum, A democratic government is one that gets power from the citizens, although it is not superior to the dictatorship form of government and has been difficult to develop and maintain in several countries due to the complications in the choice of leaders. Democracy is formed through an election process that allows the citizens to choose their leaders into the government. Democracy has been wrongly perceived as being superior to dictatorship. Generally, democracy is a system that is independent, and the success or failure determines whether it is superior to other systems of government.
