PARENTING IN 21ST CENTURY

Considering the traditional family structure changes noticeable in these modern days, fathers should also be given the opportunity just like the mothers to take care of their children. This is out of consideration to the increasing number of paternal care giver fathers who also stay at home. Contrally ideas point at the historical precedent that indicates children raised by single mothers usually grow with upright morals as compared to those raised by the single fathers. This scrutiny however does not hold true based on both the sociological and economic fluctuations of the last fifty years (Cabrera & Natasha, 2012).

In the United States for instance, statistics undertaken in the last half a century depict an up surge in single parent fathers mirrored but lagged behind the high rates of divorce. This has led to unequal assignment of parental responsibilities across men and women. In the modern society, families led by single fathers are common just like the families with both two parents working unlike some years back in America where the majority of children were raised by stay at home mothers. At the moment with the divorce cases still uncommon, the law stumbled towards conceding mothers a large share of custody rights with the assumption that mothers are well equipped and conversant with raising children when compared to father.

Those laws are still evident today, despite of married couples dividing household and child raising responsibilities (Furstenberg & Frank, 2014).

Despite of the increase in child responsibility sharing, opponent opinions have showed that female parents still perform majority of the child raising responsibilities. While more family variants still existing, the traditional two parent family structure still dominate most of the families in the United States. As a result, the opponents to this idea argue that weighing responsibility outcomes in favor of female parents remains the most logical outcome (Cabrera & Natasha, 2012).

Fathers should be accorded the same opportunities just like the mothers to gain custody of their children. As mothers continue to aggregately do majority of child-raising responsibilities, the recent increase in fathers who stay at home and two parent families indicate that the existing laws need to be revised to cater for household responsibilities and parental fitness rather than automatically trying outcomes to gender (Furstenberg & Frank, 2014).
