If you could only do one of the activities you have listed in the Experiences section of your Common Application, which one would you keep doing? Why? (Required for all applicants.)*(750)

The scout has affected me immensely. Not only it expands my view to the world from different perspectives, but it has also created a path in which I could positively impact my groups and community. During my scout career, I attended over 40 volunteer events. It includes school competition, scout level test, and world youth camp. I discussed our scout spirit and culture with over 70 countries scouts, and I brought their reflections back to my group, to my community. I want to keep doing it wherever I am, I want to help society become a better place. My experience in scout will allow me to communicate with different people, as well as organize the event that aims to enhance the internal cohesion at school.

“Once a scout, always a scout.” I belong to our community Boy Scout group. Since I was in 7th grade, the Scoutsselfless spirit has stunned me. At that time, I resolved to be one of them. After six years of effort and learning, including different kinds of experiences and challenges, I learned how to be a good leader and lead my group to benefit our community, while enriching ourselves.

As a Scout, our spirit is dedicated to society, helping people and striving for our group honor. Also, attending the level test to challenge ourselves. The tests all include teamwork. I started to observe the way each leader leads their team so that I would know how to be a good leader in the future. Through my efforts, I became the regimental commander. As a leader, I had to comply with the rules first. Based on my experience, as a leader, one must play an exemplary role, otherwise one cannot establish one’s authority. Finally, through everyone’s hard-work and cooperation in the group, I lead my group to get the honor of the out-performance Scout group in Taiwan.

Being a Scout made me into a different person. It helped me to understand that being a leader in a team means motivating a group of people to achieve the common goal, or making a group of people does something different that can change society. I will keep my Scout spirit and devote myself to leading and benefiting the communities and groups I am involved in.

Essay #2 (Required for all applicants.)

Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?*(2750)

I am applying for the undergraduate program in computer science at the University of Michigan. Motivated by my experiences both in America and Taiwan. My passion for improving the quality of life and an insatiable curiosity about how technologies can change the world let me to select the computer science program as my major.

The program at the University of Michigan provides a solid grounding in computer science that would strengthen both algorithmic fundamentals and allow me to tailor my computing studies to my specific areas of interest. I am really interested in the SURE program that provides opportunities for students to do research projects and share with others. Also, I am attracted by the M-STEM academies. I enjoy working with different people, it can not only expand my view for a future career but also I can learn how to be successful at your university. This is one of the top things I want to pursue in the future.

What attracted me most is the abundance of resources that your school offers. The Center of Statistics, Computing and Analytics Research at U-M allows us to interact with expert consultants. I learned how important it is to get information from different areas of expert knowledge through a coding competition. During that experience, the organizer invited the first responders to discuss and provide opinions about our project. Based on their reflections, we changed our project’s orientation and followed a better path. In the future, I know if I have a program to work on, I can easily assess these precious resources at the university. I desire the chance to meet with these brilliant people and learn from them. I am a person who is eager to learn, to attempt, to innovate, and even to be wrong sometimes.

Furthermore, the LSA opportunity hub encourages us to explore and search for an internship. Internship means a lot to me. I can learn how a professional workplace operates, it also prepares me for what to expect in the computer science field and increases confidence at work. Last but not least, I can figure out what I like and what I don’t like. An internship may help me to prevent me from entering a not suitable job when I graduate. This resource can give me opportunities also an understanding of my future career.

I sincerely hope that you will consider my application and give me the chance to pursue my strong interest at your university. I believe that success demands the continuous change and improvement of one’s abilities and knowledge. As a passionate and proactive person, I will always give my best efforts in every endeavor, cherish every opportunity to work with different students and faculty at your university and strive toward my goal.

Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.(1500)

Studying at Shoreline Community College has given me not only the chance to take courses in new fields but has also given me more time to reflect on what my life calling might be. I started to code when I was ten. At first, I felt coding only can gain some achievement, however, my interest in coding is increasing day by day like a snowball. My high school only teaches programming in the first two years; the third year of high school is only preparing for the test. I decided to leave my hometown and enter Shoreline Community College to continue my education. As I took a java class at my college, I talked to my professor about the current programming career and my goal in the future. I realized that a higher level of study is essential for my future studies and career. Since our college only offers associate degrees, I need to transfer to complete my bachelor’s degree. My reasons for transferring are almost entirely academic. I have spent the last two years taking advanced math classes, physics classes, and coding classes in high hopes that I have equipped myself and am ready to learn more advanced courses.

To achieve this goal, I hope to enhance my academic knowledge at the University of Michigan. I want to focus my interests on solving applicable industry problems. I am confident that under the prominent academic instruction of your university, I will be able to assimilate professional knowledge and equip myself for the future.
