Defamation of character (DOWRY HARASSMENT) is a typical example of a violation of domestic laws in India.

The term domestic abuse and Dowry Harassment are often used interchangeably in a criminal investigation. However, in the court system, they are distinct from each other. It cannot be effortless to differentiate the two because they have similar definitions and terminology.
Domestic violence, as defined by the police and other relevant law enforcement officials, is usually an instance of intimate partner violence. It may include hitting or shaking, throwing objects at the victim, intimidation of the victim, and threatening the victim. It does not usually involve physical assault but rather emotional and mental abuse.
DOWRY Harassment is the name given to the act of a person making unwanted and unwelcome contact with the victim. The communication must be unsolicited and unwelcome contact with the intent to cause the victim harm or distress.
However, there are many definitions and variations of domestic abuse, and because of the legal loopholes, these vary from state to state. In some countries, it is called “disorderly conduct” while in others, it is “domestic violence.”
Even though the common law is somewhat vague about how the act of Dowry Harassment should be defined, it is much more likely to be seen as the act of making unwanted physical contact than any emotional or psychological contact. This includes sending messages over the phone, sending unsolicited emails, offering gifts and flowers, telephone calls, as well as emails and other types of contact.
The courts will decide whether the act is justifiable under the law if it is based on specific information. If the evidence demonstrates that the action was done to either annoy or distress to the victim, then it can be considered an assault.
