What shapes more the lovers’ “story of Romeo and Juliet?”

The play portrays one of the most inspiring and tragic live story ever published in literary works. The setting is done in medieval Verona. The main characters are Romeo and Juliet. Even though Juliet has never visited Verona in person, the story line portrays such a vivid image of the city that easily gets perceived as if he was present. In relation to the story, most of the couples tend to choose Verona as their preferred romantic getaway because they get inspired by the romantic story portrayed through Shakespeare’s Rome and Juliet.

The protagonists in the play, Romeo and Juliet, come from families with different socio-economic backgrounds, the Capulet’s and Montague’s, who are sworn enemies. As a result, the two lovers decide to maintain their love affair as a top secret, before they eventually elope and get married. In the play it is also evident how Romeo used metaphors of saints and sins during his first encounter with Juliet. According to traditional norms, a woman could pretend that she does not husband the man’s romantic advancements. But in the play, Juliet yielded to Romeo advancements, which gave both couples more ground to engage into their love affair. The love affair between the two characters is so intense that even after Juliet fakes her death, Romeo is seen to commit suicide at an open coffin of his lover, Juliet. Surprisingly, Juliet wakes up gets astonished, and decides to take her own life. The two grudging families reconcile on their personal differences because two things are uniting them together, the death of their family members, Romeo and Juliet, and also they appear celebrating the deep love between the two antagonists of the play.

Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of the study to such a tragic ending storyline is for couples to appreciate their love together. According to the play, Romeo and Juliet, both the antagonists died towards the end of the play. The author is basically trying to accentuate the fact that lovers are likely to find themselves in worse possible scenarios. Both of the main characters come from families that are hostile towards each other, because, Romeo was responsible for killing Juliet’s cousin. The scenario is difficult to contend with because death historically an in all societies gets considered as catastrophic. Most families spend years or even decades trying to come with the realities of the death of a loved one. However, after periods of deliberations and escapism, the families reconcile their differences, which in most cases is difficult considering that issues of death manifested.

The death of Juliet’s cousin is one of the agonies that the lovers got faced with, however, their love sidelined the hatred, and the two couples married. The play tries to decipher real-life situations often based on emotions and feelings of couples deeply in love. For instance, there are sections associated with peace, order, and calmness. There are also sections that represent hate experienced during problems associated with love. Therefore, the main purpose of the study is to accentuate that true love exists even during scenarios of grief or hatred. The play also accentuates that true love in midst of divergent opinions gets appreciated even to the fiercest critics, and this is the case with the aspect of love in the play, Romeo and Juliet.

Methodology

The paper shall employ the use of secondary sources in acquiring relevant information regarding the aspect of love in plays. Some of the scholarly sources to get reviewed are information pertaining to the play in general. The paper shall review how love is used as a metaphor in the play to create the story line. Through the metaphor technique, readers are likely to understand in-depth what the author is trying to depict. Some of the key issues to get investigated are how the love begun, and how the two lovers reconciled even after the accusation that Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin. In most societies, killing a member of a family is an unforgivable offence, considering that the play got crafted during ancient times where the rule of law and justice was inevitable. Even if the culprit evaded the law, the aggrieved family could apply unorthodox tactics like using witchcrafts. Surprisingly, after the two conflicting families learnt of their member’s love affair, they decide to reconcile which is against the norms.

Therefore, the paper shall use metaphors to investigate how the storyline get shaped, and how different events in the play emerge. Different metaphors shall be analyzed in relation to real-life scenarios and how they synchronize with diverse contents of the play. Play transcripts from different sources, and opinion pieces from newspaper cuttings will also be used. Scholarly sources, including books, periodicals, and journals shall also be used. However, a big portion of the research shall get restricted to scholarly sources used in the annotated section of the proposal.

The rationale behind integrating diverse source of materials in particular from secondary sources is to give a comprehensive outlook on what shapes more the lovers in Romeo and Juliet.

Background of the Literature

The central theme in the play is romantic love between, Romeo and Juliet. It is evident how love manifests as a powerful force that transverses boundary of ethical values like emotions and loyalty. The two couples defy even their immediate families and entire social world. Such scenarios become evident when Romeo abandons some of his closest friends, Mercutio and Benvolio so that he can have some free time with Juliet at the garden. There are several instances when love manifests through spiritual context which is evident through the fourteen lines when the two main characters first met. There is also the context of witchcraft in their love when they describe it by saying “Alike bewitched by charm of looks.”

One interesting issue with the play is that it does not give a tentative moral statement regarding relationships between love and the family, religion, and society. Instead the play portrays passion and chaos associated with love by integrating the images of family, religion, death, violence with love through an inexplicit manner hence leading to a tragic ending. It is also evident how other themes of violence and death gets interconnected. However, the connection between violence and death to love requires in-depth assessment. It is, therefore, apparent how love in the play gets blinding to an extent that it overwhelms an individual. Such a scenario is evident from the onset of the play until its tragic end.

Another issue shaping the love is the fact that society appears to e against the two protagonists. It is evident that Romeo and Juliet are struggling against social and public institutions that are openly implicitly or explicitly are opposed to their love. These social and public structures range from the abstract to the concrete. The paper needs to investigate issues like familial power in the father, and religious institutions have come into conflict with the aspect of love in the play.

Another interesting aspect is that the play focuses on barriers towards the protagonists love instead of focusing on the main issue of love. One obstacle towards the love is the Capulet and Montague families. Romeo and Juliet are also obstacles towards their own love due to their conflicting opinions. For instance, Romeo commences the play deliberating on love in worn clichés that makes his associates get embarrassed. On the other hand, Juliet focuses on issues that deal with sex and marriage.

Another contentious issues regarding love is the timing, because all matters related to love tend to move swiftly. The issue of accelerated love gets manifested in the play when the issue of whether Juliet is old enough to be allowed for marriage. Lord Capulet gives the opinion that Juliet is very young for marriage life, before later on changing the mind and insisting that Juliet should get married in Paris. There are also several aspects between Romeo and Juliet’s relationships that illustrate the importance of time. These two characters have not only fallen in love during the first sight but marrying each other the following day.

Potential Challenges

Some of the potential challenges that I anticipate to experience throughout the paper is finding adequate relevant resources. There exist thousands of articles written about Shake Spear. However, finding relevant research materials regarding the topic of love could be a little bit tricky.

Sources used during Preliminary research

Brooks, T. R., Reysen, S., & Katzarska-Miller, I. (2018). Romeo and Juliet: Perceptions of love of stigmatized relationships.

The above article addresses the connection between perception of love and stigma in relationships. The study is ideal because it shows how different participants perceive the issue of stigma in their relationships. Through such studies, it is possible to rate the level of love among individuals. The results of the study indicate how people having a relationship with stigma attached are likely to be engaged deeply compared to people who are not. It can therefore get argued that the perception presented in the book helps the reader understand in-depth some of the issues happening within the context of Romeo and Juliet.

Isea, R., & Lonngren, K. E. (2018). Analyzing the love affair of Romeo and Juliet with modern mathematical tools. arXiv preprint arXiv:1805.06891.

The publication illustrates how the relationship between the two protagonists, Romeo and Juliet, can get interpreted through the use of modern contexts. Some of the issues considered are the time the characters spend alone together which is common with today’s happenings. There are also modern aspects the time spent consulting the social networks, time spent alone, and how both couples became tolerant when they wasted each other’s finances. Therefore, the book not only accentuates on ancient issues but also illustrates that some of th contentious topics regarding love are the same regardless of an era.
