Help Essay
We all need help at some point in our lives. However, it is not always easy to acknowledge we need help despite knowing that asking help can prevent embarrassing mistakes. This essay describes of a situation when I asked for help, the person I asked, how I asked, how I choose who to ask, the outcomes of asking for help, what I learned from the experience, and how I would respond to a person asking for similar support.
People always say that a problem shared is a problem halved. Luckily, I have had the opportunity to learn this first hand. When I was 16, anxiety came out of nowhere, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. For a while, I tried to hide it desperately from friends and family. However, it reached a point when I was utterly overwhelmed by worry and tension, and I had to open up on my experiences. Eventually, I managed to seek assistance.
I asked for assistance from Joy, a licensed professional psychologist offering psychotherapy. The psychologist is trained in the diagnosis of anxiety disorders and educating patients on healthier behaviors of coping with the disorder. With psychotherapy, the physiologists and the patients collaborate in identifying the concerns as well as determining the techniques for dealing with the matters (Higgins-Chen, Abdallah, Dwyer, Kaye, Angarita & Bloch, 2019). Often, psychologists use cognitive behavioral therapy to treat the disorders, but they can also use approaches such as group psychotherapy and family therapy depending on the severity of the disease.
When I went to see the psychotherapist for the first session, she listened carefully to my distress, and it created a spirit of excitement to the relationship. Thus, I was very eager to have other sessions with her because there was something about her that I found intriguing. In the course of the other sessions, we generated a problem list and begun articulating the problems to possible solutions. Towards the completion of my psychotherapy sessions, I started noticing some positive outcomes.
When asking for help, it is essential to choose an experienced and competent person who can help you to solve the problem in question. I decided to ask for help from Joy by researching the state’s psychological association. Here, I found that she has been practicing in the specific field of my issue for more than a decade. She had also been listed as the best psychotherapists in the association. She had received several awards from the state’s department of mental health for producing positive outcomes in her clients.
The whole process was hugely successful because it offered the helped I asked for by combating my anxiety disorder. The treatment leads to recovery and the elimination of a range of reactions, including anger, depression, fear, and worry that had previously inhibited me from living my life normally. The reason that the therapy triggered thoughts triggered positive feelings and behaviors. As a result, I was able to function better at school, and I developed improved relationships with my family and friends.
Seeking help for my anxiety disorder taught me that complete independence is impossible. I realized that society seems to tout independence as the thing to aspire to, but it is not realistic to achieve since humans are wired to connect, and so, they should aim at interdependence. No single person can survive without the help of other people. Therefore, when if a person fails to ask for help, he or she misses the opportunity to connect with the other person.
If someone today asked me how to cope with their anxiety disorder, I would advise them to seek help from a professional who understands their problem. In particular, I would refer them to Joy because she develops an enabling environment for her clients to express themselves without being judgmental. With such, the person would get healed and appreciate the significance of interdependence.
