Belle Isle island park

Belle Isle is an island park on the River Detroit. Initially inhabited in the 1700s, the region became known as the Hog Island by French explorers. The park was influenced by Paris and was born out of the trend for public parks at the end of the 19th century. The biggest city island park in the world is the Belle Isle, covering 900 acres and larger than the Central Park in New York City. Both parks were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the famed landscape architect. It was officially opened in 1845 when the island became known as Belle Isle. In 1879, Detroit purchased the park. This elegant oasis, linked by the MacArthur Bridge to Detroit, is rich with unique architecture, fountains, sculptures and lagoons. Belle Isle is home to a post of the Coast Guard with an area and a road, including a large forest with fallow deers. Picnic places, access to the beach and a playground are given. Sports fans appreciate a cricket stadium, basketball courts, tennis courts and a small golf course on the island. On the island is also the glamorous and ancient Detroit Yacht Club as well as the first Detroit Boat Club.

On July 21 1853, the New York State legislature introduced legislation to establish the first large, landscaped park in America that was to be named Central Park. The government separated more than 750 hectares of central land to Manhattan Island. The popularity of Central Park quickly promoted the concept of the urban park movement, one of the hallmarks of democracy in America of the 19th century. The societal, political and economic condition affected the Central Park structure at the turn of the 20th century, which led to its first significant collapse. The federal support for the reconstruction of many degraded natural areas and buildings, as well as the massive public outreach for after-depression communities, were given to Park Commissioner Robert Moses from 1934 to 1960.

He made 19 playgrounds, ball fields, handball courts and Wollman Rink. Nevertheless, after he left office, no management strategy was established to ensure that tourists to Central Park were kept in good stewardship or trained, and the second most damaging deterioration impacted the vulnerable park for the next two decades. Central Park was in a state of persistent decline. Meadows were now empty dustbowls; tables, signs, and park structures had crashed, and the city’s one hundred years old park had failed. The social behaviour of the park was demonstrated by unregulated quantities of waste, graffiti, vandalism, was carefree, and violent. Central Park was an unconstitutional and hazardous disaster for imagination. Less accountability prevailed in the park despite the allocation of over three hundred Parks Department workers.

After a study by concerned citizens, Elizabeth Barlow was appointed as the new park administrator. Following her appointment, she developed strategies to raise money that would help restore Central Park. This led to the merging of the Central Park Community Fund and the Central Perk Task Force to form the Central Park Conservancy. After the merger, the systematic regeneration of the deteriorating park progressed with an aim to accomplish its goal with the help of a conservation-financed master plan. When the conservancy showed its willingness to preserve and sustain the park, more private persons and businesses put their trust and resources into saving Central Park. The conservancy directed three active capital projects between 1987 and 2008 to rebuild Central Park to ensure that the park’s renovation was accomplished. The restoration provided a legacy to guarantee a safe green and healthy future for Central Park for the first time in Central Park’s tumultuous past.

John Williams was only 12 years old when his grandfather and guardian passed away. His grandfather, an environmentalist, who was fascinated by visiting recreational centres and national parks, often organized trips along with his church members. John was young for these trips but later found visiting recreational parks as a way to honour his grandfather. One of the parks he visited was the Central Park, New York in 1989 and in 2010. John narrates his first visit as one that is not worth remembrance. As John was turning 34, he visited the park on April 15, 1989. He added that this was just five days short of one of the most focused on crimes carried out in the park. On April 20, a body of an unconscious woman by the name Trisha Meili was discovered raped and badly bruised. A rush decision from the authority and pressure from the public led to the wrongful conviction of five suspects dubbed as the “Central Park Five.” Williams added that the state of the park was unbearable and failed to provide the much-needed relief for city dwellers. He also noted that the state of the park was different in 2010. He added that the park was generally safe and his experience was different. During William’s first visit, Central Park had recorded 368 serious crimes. These crimes included mugging, sexual assault, murder, and grand larceny. Since the turn of the 21st century, parks in the United States have undergone serious changes that have improved the effect they have on the public. The administrations governing the parks have developed measures to improve the state of parks. In the late 20th century, a series of crimes, which included high profile deaths, left most of the public wondering if park were safe anymore.
