Aristotle’s Friendship and Batuman’s Theory of Relativity

Friendship is a virtue and the most necessary for our life. Even under satisfactory conditions where one has everything one cannot afford to live without friends. However according to Aristotle there exists three form of friendships (Aristotle). First is the utility friendship, second friendship based on pleasure and delight and thirdly friendship based on virtues. Aristotle’s friendship relates to Batumans theory of relativity since he shows how transactional relationships can represent unconditional love because of their unambiguous nature. Aristotle’s friendship also relate to Sensini because Sensini Shows how association result from goodwill; thus, goodwill is essential in the formation of an association. From seven types of love and theory of relativity, passionate love is necessary for forming romantic relationships. Also, from seven kinds of love and Sensini friendship result from shared goodwill and is essential in building good rapport. Therefore the study looks at the relationship of bonds in Aristotle’s friendship, the theory of relativity, Sensini, and seven types of love.

Friendship in Aristotle’s Friendship and A Theory of Relativity.

Friendship occupies a significant role in the lives of humans because no one can live without friends, no matter their possession of power in society. Both the rich and the poor equally rely on friends for company and love. However, one form of friendship in Aristotle is that based on utility, where friends can choose a friend or lover for a specific purpose where once the goal gets sustained, they dispose of the friendship. Batuman’s theory of relativity demonstrates the bond based on utility from its text of love and friendship and also explains the theory of relativity.

From the text, Batuman narrates the time he spent with Chie, the rental mother he picked at the station, and how fond they had become. But their friendship had to be cut in the end. Because both had played their parts, and they had fulfilled what brought them together. After Kazushige Nishida lost her wife and daughter, he spent his life very lonely because he missed his family (Batuman). As Aristotle demonstrates that no one lives without friends, the loneliness led him to rent a wife and daughter who had a similar physique as his wife and daughter and occasionally called them by the names of the former to try and kill the loneliness that he suffered. As the theory of relativity demonstrates that transactional relationships due to their unambiguous nature can lead to unconditional love, the business brought friendship, which escalated to love. At some point, the adopted daughter convinced Nishida to call his daughter, which he did out of love built between them. This shows friendship built on virtues where a friend wants the best and good things for their friends. However, the relationship at the end broke up since Nishida had attained the objective of forgetting his wife since he recalls how beautiful the relationship was with a smile saying that he did not miss the women with any sense of urgency or longing when they left. But he thought it nice to spend more time with them again (Batuman 50). Also, in Batuman (56), the woman remembers the time they spent together and wishes for more and regrets not having time because of work. The woman, regardless of being hired to become the wife she fell in love with Nishida, but this shows that Nishida’s friendship was based on utility to forget his wife and daughter and also demonstrates the theory of relativity.

Aristotle Friendship and Sensini

According to Aristotle, perfect friendship is the one of virtue and good in which love each other for their own sake and wish each other good. Both Aristotle and Sensini examine whether best friends are similar or dissimilar and whether having friends makes one better.

From Bolano and Aristotle’s texts, the making of friendship from goodwill is demonstrated from the establishment of an association through friendly and cooperative attitudes. The letter begins with a blessing on prizes, precious supplements to the writer’s modest income referring to the sponsors-town councils. And credit unions and the good people with a touching faith in the literature (Bolano 7), it shows that Bolano and Sensini’s friendship grew out of wishing each other well. It also proves the Aristotle point of attachment increases from wishing others good other than intimacy. The two liked each other’s work and wished each other progress making them friends since Sensini thanks promoters and requests Bolano to alert him in case there was any other competition. However, friends become dissimilar since having friends does not make one necessarily better dissolving the goodwill in friendship. Bolano had to break the bond since Sensini was leaving for his country and did not send more emails. Bolano reports that he gradually had to accept that Sensini had gone, and unless he wrote back, the friendship had just ended (Bolano 13). Aristotle and Sensini acknowledge friendship comes from goodwill and can quickly end when friends become dissimilar as Bolano and Sensini seized being friends due to sending letters with no replies.

Seven types of love and theory of relativity

The transactional relationship demonstrates unconditional love demonstrating a different form of the seven types of love.

Nishida, through his rented daughter, found peace with himself to the point of treating her like her daughter and telling her the truth about her real daughter. On the other hand, the rented daughter was loving and cared for Nishida. This is demonstrated by the uncertainty of Nishida for whom the rental daughter had spoken. Nishida claims the rented daughter acted like one, but at the same time, she told him her feeling like a real daughter (Batuman 50). The story demonstrates Storge’s love, which is the fondness that results in dependency or familiarity (Burton). Nishida grows fond of his rented daughter that makes him explain to her rented daughter the events that caused his real daughter to run away. The rented daughter advises him to call the real daughter and make peace with her. This demonstrates that the Storge love forms dependency or familiarity, which makes people start trusting each other to talk about their issues. Also, friendship becomes essential in agape love, which, according to Burton, is universal and does not depend on familiarity or filiation. In this love, the continuity of the house was more important than blood kinship (Batuman 57). Agape kind of love results in unselfish concerns for other’s welfare. Everyone is interested in having the community grow to allow a smooth transition. These are evidenced by letting the eldest son and adopted sons succeed organization and also by the rented daughter advising Nishida to call and make peace with the real daughter.

Seven Types of Love and Sensini

Sensini demonstrates love based on goodwill or pleasure and desire, which also demonstrates certain aspects of love according to the seven types of love.

The seven types of love also demonstrate Philia, which Burton states as shared goodwill as a form of love. Goodwill is shared when there exists a feeling of usefulness when one is good and pleasant. In Bolano’s test, he claims Sensini urged him to keep the letters an opinion he did not share at first to preserve the messages with his writing. Still, with the competitions as Sensini assured him, he would do(Bolano 4). Bothe had only met once and never interacted, and Sensini thought Bolano as a good writer and requested him to alert him in case he heard another competition. Also, self-love results from self-esteem and is also an essential form of love. Bolano min, his text expresses self-love, as evidenced by the events when he received the anthology. His story was better from the winning one, and that made him curse the judges with a question to himself, wondering what one could expect (Bolano 2). Through self-love, Bolano’s self-esteem is not affected when the award becomes awarded to someone else, but he believes more in himself and becomes confident in his essay. He invests in his writing without the fear of failure or rejection. Through self-love, Bolano cannot despair himself from not being awarded out of the perfect work of his which he claims superior to the works that won the prize but has the determination to continue providing the best.
