Changes Needed in Education System
Introduction
Education is the gateway to a better life. Some people are born in affluent families, and they go through life with the assurance that they will never have financial problems. Others are not so lucky, and they have to work hard in life to have a decent living. Such people always hope for a better life. There are many ways for people to change their social class in life. Among them is playing in competitive sports such as basketball, football, or enter the entertainment industry. People who end up in the sports and entertainment industry become instant millionaires, and live the dream life that we see in reality TVs. However, Hollywood and sports represent a tiny population of America, and for every person who makes it there, there are hundreds of broken dreams that we do not see or hear their stories.
Education, however, can change many lives and help many young students succeed in their lives. Getting a good education can change a person’s life, and with the opportunities in the world today, a good education can never disappoint in life. Policies needed in our education system
There is an urgent need for more funding for colleges and universities in our country. For the past couple of years, government spending on higher education has declined, and this has forced the institutions to increase their fees. This puts the burden of education to families, and families that cannot afford the costs have to use other means to pay for tuition. This leaves the student with a lot of debt that after university, they have to pay, taking them years to settle the debt. Student debt also affects the student’s ability to continue to higher levels of education since they will require more funding, and this, in turn, means more debt after completion. The student debt problem is making many people think that higher education is a financial trap since many students are unable to pay it after completion. Lack of job opportunities is causing people to shun higher education since there are no returns on investment for education. The government needs to increase its funding to higher education to help the underprivileged to have access to cheaper education that will not burden them for years to come.
The public education system needs changes from the teachers to the quality of education itself. Many teachers in the public education system are demoralized and bored with their work. There are concerns that the students in public high school do not have support at school, and the teachers are just going on teaching without taking an interest in the students. One of the reasons why students find subjects hard is not because the subject is hard, but it is because they have never taken their schoolwork seriously. Since students are still growing and in their teenage years, a motivating teacher can make all the difference for such students. Not all of them will benefit, but showing interest in people opens them up, and they can even tell the other person where the problem is. Looking for ways to have teachers take an interest in their students will help such students, and they can end up joining universities and doing courses that will help them all their lives.
With changes in public school, there needs to be community education for parents to help their children with school work. This is important for parents who never advanced their studies and probably do not know how to help their children succeed. Some parents work for too long and end up exhausted at the end of the day and never ask their children how they are doing in school. Others ask but never bother to look at their children’s work to know their progress. Such children study without parental support and, at some point, even ask themselves the use of education. Others need the help of their parents, and when they do not get it, they get demotivated, leading to poor performance at school. With parental support, students will at least have someone who can listen and help them when they hit a wall. Parental support is very critical at this stage of a person.
Public schools need to change their philosophy. Many students in private schools know what they want to do after they finish high school. Most of them end up studying for medicine, law, and banking, with their parents, teachers, and the environment they are in pushing them to such courses. Students from public schools come from all types of backgrounds, and some have no idea what they want to pursue or where they want to go to college. With their parents being in the working class, public school students have no role models in society and end up with the same jobs their parents and people in their neighborhood do for a living. Having role models can open up curiosity in their minds and make them work hard to achieve the success that their role models have in life. The school system can look for ways to help the student in these regards. For a start, the teachers can provide the students with international magazines and newspapers and invite successful people to give talks at school.
Conclusion
Most of the factors affecting the youth today are due to external factors that the government and society can come together to solve. Increasing college funding makes education affordable for many students. Changes in public schools are in urgent need to help the student succeed in life. The student in high school are still developing their brains and support from their families, and teachers can make all the difference in this world for them.
