Abolish the Indian Act
The issue of indigenous groups and discrimination in Canada is a common occurrence. The Indian Act was one of the policies that were set to aid in the governance of the various groups of people in Canada. Generally, the Indian Act was established to help in the assimilation of Indians in the national structure of Canada. However, the Act has remained racial as the attempts to assimilate the Indians have only been forced, and no positive impacts have been associated with the Act. The Indian Act should be abolished because it places the Indian community in a more exposed position for discrimination under the excuse of assimilation.
The Indian Act was established to assimilate the Indians into the Canadian system. The Act has, however, had more negative than positive impacts on the indigenous community. Generally, the Indians have been the targets of all forms of discrimination and suffering under the excuse of implementing the Act. Also, the abolishment of the Act has been the call of a large percentage of the politicians who take advantage of the desperation of Canadians who are against discrimination (Kielland & Tiedemann, 2018).The Indians have received unnecessary attention because the Act gives them different treatment from other groups, and the results have been disastrous. For example, the first stages of implementation saw a high number of Indian children die due to circumstances surrounding forced education. Also, statistics have been tailored to have the Indian community on the spot for the wrong reasons. The Act should be abolished to have the Indian society saved from discrimination.
In sum, the Indian Act led to the discrimination of the Indian community and should be abolished. The results of the Act’s implementation have seen the Indians suffer since its introduction. Therefore, the Indian Act should be abolished under the efforts to end discrimination.
