Sexual Violence in the Army
One of the biggest challenges that are experienced in the army is sexual violence’s aimed at both men and women. However, women are the most prevalent victims of sexual harassment in the military, considering their underrepresentation. Despite these teaching, cases of sexual harassment involving military personnel continued to hit the headline in the past few years. The sharp program addresses how to stop sexual harassment instead of the cause of sexual harassment. Therefore to prevent the increased cases of sexual harassment, the army educative programs should integrate the complete interactions between cultural, gender, and learning goals on equality.
Most of the researches suggests that most of the behaviors are earned through experiences. Through the leaning theories, the most significant number of sexual perpetrators once experienced sexual harassment in their life. Therefore we can say that the educational program that is trained ion the army does not address the behavior that is leaned by the students either through experience. For example, children who experience sexual violence at young ages from their guardians and mentors are likely to commit sexual harassment crime. Also, during the young, people develop different perspectives related to sexuality and how one should express their sexual intent (Gannon et al., 2012). Negative notions can cause people to create sexual harassment behavior against people while in the army.
The masculinity culture within the army is a severe cause of sexual harassment in the military. Masculinity is contributed by the risk of rape culture and indicated how sexual violence is normalized in the military. This type of culture effects ways in which the sense of equality is reinforced in the military and how military people normalize cases of rape. The SHARP program should instead focus on enhancing gender equality culture in the army. The SHARP program overlooks the impact of social incentives on the behavior of the military personnel. Coming from a different racial background, the military personnel has views towards gender roles and equality. The presence of masculinity culture that is integrated with the influence of these cultures creates more impact. The current approach fails to address these issues.
Over the centuries, it is theorized the reason for sexual violence is that the males are obligated to be under men’s dominance. This theory justifies the idea based on the creation of stories and ancient teachings of the communities where women were supposed to work acct under man’s rules and had no rights. Since women are treated as minor and subject to men, the cases of rape increase as men seek sexual satisfaction (Rosellini et al., 2017). However, this theory is considered irrelevant by feminists who say that females have an equal right to men.
The SHARP classes should, therefore, address the issue of cultural influence on the concept of gender roles and equality. The ideology of natural laws addresses social justice regardless of gender, and SHARP classes should stop cultural influence. The SHARP program should include criteria through which soldier can undergo rehabilitation process and help them recover from sexual harassment victimization
In conclusion, the SHARP program should eliminate the present misunderstandings on sexuality. Military academies most important value taught involves self-conduct in understanding consent and principles concerning sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is treated as a violation of military rules, and the offender is liable to discharge, suspension, taken to court-martial.
