Vikings raided the region of Francia which is modernly known as France during the 9th century
was rapid and made the region unstable hence making it difficult for the growth of population. Charlemagne, the king of the Franks had led numerous military war campaigns on Saxon wars, he killed many people, and he was never afraid of battle. The first raiding done by Charlemagne was to raid Francia through the route of Seine which occurred in 820 CE, and they had a lot of raids to come. Charlemagne used all of his time and the time he ruled in attacks a military conquest. He used to go against the people of Saxony were so outrageous has they were brutal as seen in the massacre of Verden when he killed 4200 Saxons, this event led to his Frankish historians trying to make this look good instead than being a bad thing that he did.
The Vikings raided Charlamagne territory using the sea attacked the Frankish empire ten years after the earliest known Viking attack in England, this Viking attacks made Charlemagne create a team that protected the coastal region or instead he created a defence team to protected its bordering areas. Vikings attack were often by the scandavalinas as they were in hunger for power and status and for them to be noble, they were aware of the political instability of Francia, and that’s why they attacked through the sea. The Vikings in early the 830s and 840s took advantage of the civil war that was in Francia, and their main raids took place in Antwerp and Noirmouiter in 836 on the Seine and Nantes.
The Vikings ships continued their raids, and on March 845, they came with ships carrying more than 5000 men entered the Seine in command of a Danish leader named Reginherus who conquered the Frankish army, and they were able to take 111 of their men as prisoners, and at the end of the day, they were hanged on the island of Seine. This attack was that of the honour of the Norse god Odin and also to bring horror and to make them be afraid of the Vikings all this was done to scare the Frankish forces. The Vikings after raiding Seine, they managed to enter Paris on Easter Sunday 29 of March, and they were able to conquer it, but unfortunately, a plague occurred in the camp because the Norse god was exposed to Christianity or the Christian religion, the Christian prisoners asked the Vikings to pray and conduct a fast to break the plague, and they were successful. The Franks had no defence mechanism against their attackers, and therefore the Franks decided to pay Vikings a ransom of 7000 french pounds, and they withdrew from Francia. The invasion by the Vikings was for revenge purposes after their leader lost his land to Charles; therefore, by taking the 2570kilograms of gild meant that he had exerted his revenge to Francia. The Viking leader received thirteen payments from the Francia.
During their withdrawal from Francia, they parted with several sites including the Abbey of Saint Bertin this was possible because Charlemagne did not fight or did not bring chaos to the Vikings simply because he had issues to deal with concerning that of his brothers, the regional revolts and the disgruntled nobles and he also received pressure from abroad, and he also did not have trust in his soldiers to defeat Ragnar who came in with a large force military, through giving them a ransom Charles was able to buy more time so that he could get a peace treaty from other Vikings to raid in the future.
During the Charlemagne reign, he was able to control the invasion of the Vikings, but after his death, they were unable to hold attacks from the Vikings. This made them more potent over the opponents in this regard. The Vikings became more severe that they were used to during the quest to introduce Christianity. They were explicitly used to sack Hamburg by Pope Gregory IV when they were in the quest to bring up an introduction of Christianity in Scandinavia. The kind of courage and confidence the Vikings has made them widely known till date. The sort of history the Vikings have made can never be overwritten even in the next centuries./////
