Mainstream and Marginalized American Person

Life has various opportunities that we have to grab and utilize as human beings to succeed in life. However, different people have different stories on their journey from poverty to riches. Different circumstances limit us from achieving our dreams like other people due to the constraints of social, economic, and political obstacles on the path to one’s journey to success. However, constraints give rise to terms such as mainstream and marginalized in referring to people depending on the chances they have in overcoming the various challenges. A mainstream person is the one with normal conditions which enable them to overcome the difficulties easily without too much struggle while the marginalized person is one who is for a various reason find it hard to aces the services obtained by the mainstream people. The paper, therefore, compares the struggle of mainstream and marginalized people in society on their path to success.

Comparison 1: Mainstream American and Frederick Douglas.

The mainstream American man had everything on his way easy without a struggle. The ability to rise from poverty to riches was on his path. Though from a poor background, the mainstream American struggled and worked hard to rise to the level of success. His efforts found no obstacles that he could not handle and excelled from various encouragement and support. However, Frederick Douglas found it hard to take the opportunities that came his way. He was also from a poor background, meaning that they had similar challenges and conditions from the onset. However, for Douglas, it wasn’t elementary to control what he did since he was much-denied opportunities for studies. Yet he was so different from the mainstream man since he used his effort and pushed through driven by his passion and desire to change his life. While the opportunities for mainstream seem to have been handed on a silver Plata, Frederick had to struggle more than the others to obtain what he wanted since the society had discriminated him from his race and could not become accepted anywhere.

The mainstream mainly received support from society, and also the economic conditions in their neighborhood encouraged success since they were suitable for the mainstream. Contrary to Frederick, who even did not receive support from his own family was severely rejected by society and denied access to services such as education. With the economy making it hard for a person of his race to obtain assistance and had to struggle and put more hard work compared to the mainstream to succeed. One can say that luck was on the two since, with much struggle or less to accomplish anything without lack, al would not yield anything.

Comparison 2: Sadie Browne and Mainstream American

Though they all are from the same race, the mainstream enjoyed much freedom then Sadie Browne in the society. The opportunities to overcome obstacles were very limited in terms of the chances she got. At the time, most of her generation were not receiving education due to their sex. Females were seen not deserving of learning, and when they obtained one, it was not the same quality, which meant their competitiveness with the mainstream man in employment were very minimal, thus making her lack then chance of creating and generating her income to her things. She had to go a long way in obtaining an education, putting a lot of effort with a lot of struggles in overcoming poverty, and getting an education. She took upon herself to learn things as she observed.

Her case in terms of support is different from the mainstream man since she first did not have support from the family and thus caused her to lack purpose in life, which limited her ability. The society though in a way, supportive offered the help in partiality with others discouraging her and making her feel bad and sorry for her self-questioning her skills and efforts in accomplishing her goals. Consequently, the economy was not so forthcoming since it offered restrictions to her knowledge by the culture set in the society that a woman cannot become economically productive by engaging in economic activities as those with the men counterparts. Also, the political obstacles were very harsh on her gender, limiting her ability to fulfill her goals in life.

Also, the mainstream American had luck on his side, which helped him succeed due to the enormous freedom in the social, economic, and political conditions which supported and encouraged his actions to prevail. Browne, on the other hand, lacked luck since it seems all aspects of life, and the most basic unit of the family was against her, which affected her mentally, limiting her abilities.

Consequently, concerns of mainstream and marginalized person are highlighted in the difference of treatment the two obtain in the society and how the culture and economical with the political policies act against their efforts. Marginalized people, however, are not from one race, but all races have people marginalized who are affected by either the social or economic and political prejudice against them. Equal access to services and loving among society should become a concern since the marginalization of people has detrimental effects on health and social life.
